5 Facts You MUST Understand Before You Give a Best Man Speech

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 143

Best Man speeches can be difficult for guys who over complicate and make the event bigger than it needs to be. You can easily get caught up in blowing this speech out of proportion and making it seem like it's the biggest thing in the world. If that's the case for you, just take a deep breath and relax. Many speech writing guides will boast that they can teach you the funniest one liners, opening remarks to grab the most attention, or the most touching toasts. Hoping and searching for the words that are just perfect wastes a ton of time. Instead, focus on these five tips for writing, practicing and delivering a great best man speech.

1. You don't need to have a ton of public speaking experience or polish to give a great best man speech. In fact, just writing a sincere speech will help you appear more confident on stage. Add in a few changes to the way you practice your speech and you'll be a polished public speaker by wedding day.

2. You can learn a lot from watching and listening to other best man speeches. You should always ask "Why?" instead of "What?" In other words, figure out why a certain line or joke worked so you can personalize it to your situation. This is much better than just copying someone else.

3. You are the groom's best man and your speech will probably focus on him solely for about 90% of the speech. However, what you say to the bride is the MOST important part of your speech and will have lasting effects. You must get this part right because she will remember what you say about her. More importantly, she will remember your best man speech, especially if you neglect to mention or heap praise on her.

4. Memorizing your speech word-for-word is NOT the best way to give your best man speech. I'll tell you why you should have a piece of paper in your hand while delivering your toast. Reciting a memorized speech appears to be robotic and mechanical.

5. You DON'T need to buy a canned, pre-written speech off the internet. Your audience can tell it's not authentic and it won't feel special to the occasion. Best man speeches turn out much better when the best man writes a genuine, heartfelt toast. I'll show you how to brainstorm everything you need and how to organize those thoughts.
