Why We Experience Different Types of Dreams

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 95

There are many types of dreams from the lovely ones that you never want to wake from to the horrible ones that leave you sweating and afraid to fall back to sleep. 'Why do we dream?' Is a question that has been asked by mankind for centuries and we may be able to answer when we take a quick look at two very different types of dreams people have, their causes and what they are trying to tell us.

The first type of dream that almost everyone thinks of when asked is the nightmare. These are the dreams that are scary, or very emotional and often leave people with physical reactions like sweaty palms and forehead or accelerated heartbeat even after they wake up. Due to the intensity of these types of dreams people can usually recall in vivid detail exactly what was happening and the dreams stays with them sometimes for many days after. If you are a highly sensitive person or very emotional then you will likely have more nightmares than your counterparts. This is because you are usually more in-tune with your surroundings. However, everyone will have a nightmare or two at some point in their life and researchers believe this is because nightmares are your body's way of either warning you about a potential danger or problems you are not seeing, or to get you to deal with a problem in your life that you have been avoiding and refusing to deal with.

Another type of dream, daydreaming, is one that many people do not always count as a 'real dream' because they happen when you are still partially awake and you control the content. Nonetheless, daydreams are still very much a real type of dream and one that can tell people a lot about their life and wishes and goals. Many people think that they are just fantasies that happen when we are bored or let our minds wander, but looking at the content of your daydreams can help a person look deeper into themselves, at what is important to them and sometimes they reveal emotions and desires that we may be hiding from ourselves in our real, everyday lives. Daydreams are not always positive either, this is a common misconception and people should be aware that anytime their mind wanders in worry or sadness - daydreaming thoughts of loss or disaster or revenge - these also count as dreams and should be analyzed to see what negative thought patterns are occupying our minds, causing us stress and worry.

While there are many types of dreams that range from scary nightmares to the light-hearted fantasies of a daydream, it is important that we take notice of them in whatever form they come. They can reveal to us our innermost desires that can bring our lives more fulfillment and joy, and they can expose the negative thoughts and stressors occupying our minds, and it is only once these negative thoughts are revealed only then can we make a conscious decision to change them. So here's to the power of dreams!
