The Debate Over HTML 5 and the Future of Multi-Media eBooks Considered

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 149

"Information wants to be free," and we know that a lack of information holds people down, and gives the advantage to those who hold that information. This has been known throughout history, and we need not let the future repeat. Now then, we see that HTML 5 is about ready to hit the scene, and it will enable developers, and users to do things they never could before. This is great for humankind, well that is, if it doesn't get hijacked before it is delivered to all of us?

There seems to be a pretty big debate that this is happening right now by some of the big boys in the industry, and some of the developers are quite upset about it, and it is fairly obvious that there are two different mindsets that both groups are coming from. Nevertheless, we shouldn't shoot ourselves in the foot while screaming censorship, or accusing one-party of trying to hijack the entire party.

HTML 5 should be an enabler for mankind, and not an enabler of less than ethical folks who will deprive the innovators of our time from earning a living, to propel themselves and their works in the world, thus giving even more value to humankind. Okay so, I'd like to talk about this for a second if I might, and please realize I am not taking sides.

You see, I feel for both sides of the argument, and actually so strongly for both points of view, as I myself as a user who will be stuck in the middle either way - now then, there was an article in Physorg (dot) com recently titled; "HTML5 spec editor slams Google & gang's DRM bid," by Nancy Owano (published on February 26, 2012) which stated;

"A draft proposal by Google, Microsoft and Netflix to introduce mechanisms for copy protection on web videos has generated strong opposition and a response that the proposal is "unethical." Reaction has been strong against the powerful trio's bid to see HTML5 carry digital rights management (DRM) tools."

Yes, okay, I totally get his concern here, and there are fundamental differences on such things. First, I question the whole DRM thing really, as hackers will always be able to break it and anyone who really wishes to steal a work such as a text-work copyrighted and piracy protected with DRM can merely take a picture of it with a screen shot on their eReader and then edit the picture, or print it and have OCR software read it and convert it to text. So, there is no way to protect text-documents or eBooks anyway, even if the DRM was robust and unbreakable.

Next, let's say that HTML 5 did come with the ability to track and protect multi-media namely videos, well then the newest form of eBooks "multi-media" eBooks, well, that then would enable an endless stream of artists, writers, and other folks to produce them, with a solid income stream to continue to produce more. Now then, would the world be better if that were so? Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
