Forget Alan Turning - I Have a Better Test for Artificial Intelligence

June 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 184

As the coordinator for a think tank which operates online, one of my favorite topics is artificial intelligence. In fact, I do believe in the future that the CEOs of every major corporation will actually be a supercomputer with artificially intelligent software running the central nervous system of the entire corporation from their sales business units to their warehouse and inventory. I believe there will be holographic professors in our colleges, and that in the future we may have a president but he will work closely with the artificially intelligent decision-making machine.

Eventually, I believe humans will come to trust computers more than their fellow man. And if they were smart, they might start thinking that way sooner than later, especially judging by all the shenanigans and corruption that happens in governments around the world, ours included, although ours is the best one going apparently. Of course depending on the day, that doesn't give me much confidence even in my own country, which I believe to be the greatest nation ever created in the history of mankind.

Next, there is a big debate, often started by creationists that goes something like this; "computers will never reach the level of human intelligence." Personally, I think that's laughable, and we've already seen the best Jeopardy players being beaten by IBM's Watson, and the greatest human chess players being beaten by IBM's chess champion computer. Now then, many people might say that's not true intelligence, which is true, but judging by the performance, what does it matter. And, Alan Turing aside, I do believe that very soon AI computers will easily pass the Turing Test, which may not be good enough for the naysayers.

Fine, that's okay with me. In fact, the Turing Test seems too easy a test anyway. In fact, I see things a different way, and I see intelligence from robotic computer systems getting to a much higher plateau.

"When we catch computers having fun, entertaining themselves without being programmed to do so, but rather learning and enjoying the process, as they explore activities for the sake of it and none other reason," that would be the Winslow AI Test.

When that happens, I hope the debate will be over, and no one will ever say "never" again when it comes to artificial intelligence.

Okay so, I'd like you to think about this on a philosophical level for a few moments, if you have any comments or questions at that point, please shoot me an e-mail for an online dialogue. Until then I hope you will please consider all this.
