Six Steps To Becoming The Speaker Audiences Want To Hear

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 144

Becoming a competent and even a compelling speaker is not an achievement reserved for just a few extraordinarily gifted people. Fortunately, there are not dozens of steps you need to take, only a few that are fundamental. This article offers six steps that are simple to implement, yet powerful in the response they generate..

ONE: Don't start your speech with a joke.

Because so many jokes circulate on the Internet, your group may have heard the joke already. Or the joke could seem offensive to one or more listeners. Or you might botch the punch line, and feel embarrassed. I'm not implying that you should omit humor. Just leave the joke telling to Leno and Letterman. Amuse your audience with brief quips and quotes, especially those you think of spontaneously.

TWO: Change your opinion about audiences.

Consider audiences your cheerleaders, not your critics. They want you to succeed, because bad speeches make audiences uncomfortable. Really, most of your listeners are thinking: "I'm glad she's the one speaking, not me." Also, audiences will tolerate your mistakes, because they prefer a real person to a flawless robot.

THREE: Change your opinion of the speaking situation.

Forget the notion of "delivering" a speech. Leave delivery to the postal system and other transporters. You're not handing out packages. Instead, think of yourself as having a personal conversation with your audience, just as you would at a coffee shop with a few friends.

FOUR: Use the best preparation method.

Don't write your speech, because usually written language sounds more formal than audiences want to hear. Don't memorize your content. Word for word recitation is for actors only. The ideal approach: after considerable research and organization, jot down key words that will prompt you to remember your message.

FIVE: Share compelling stories, not statistics.

Paul Harvey's radio broadcasts kept listeners spellbound, because he told stories they could relate to. Instead of giving data about paralysis victims, describe the courage and triumph of Christopher Reeve.

SIX: Support everything you say by your character.

Quintilian said the orator is "a good man speaking well." Aristotle taught that the speaker's character may well be his most convincing asset. Consider: Would you believe a Bernie Madoff speech about investment ethics?

In summary, you can become the speaker audiences want to hear by eliminating joke telling from your introductory comments, recognizing that audiences are your cheerleaders, comparing public speaking to having a conversation with a few close friends, using the key word preparation method, holding attention through dramatic stories, and keeping your life consistent with your message.
