Seen Or Not Seen - Do You Make This Deadly Mistake With Your Web Videos?

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

Twenty years ago digital videos (unlike mobile /cell phones!) were the size of a postage stamp and the quality was bad but at the time that was all we had a few people used them, however fast forward to 2012 and it seems like everybody is using web video these days!

Whether you're creating video sales letters, web TV shows or online product demonstrations, if you're not using video you may be missing out on potential sales.

If you want to create web videos - and they are incredibly easy to use and upload, I want to alert you to a very common mistake even some of the most well-known marketers make when it comes to using web video. As a matter of fact, I am amazed just how often I see this mistake from those who really should know better.

Maybe you've seen it too? It goes like this...

You're invited to view a video online and you visit the page, only to see a blank area where the video should be or maybe even a message telling you your device doesn't support the video format the page is using (this happens more frequently to iPad and iPhone users). Since you cannot view the video, you "x" off the page never to return again, resulting in a loss for the web page owner.

The problem (which is quite easy to fix) lies in the fact that the video format used was not the right format for maximum viewership.

Just about every web video format, save one, can cause issues with various computers and mobile devices. So if you're using SWF, FLV, AVI, MOV, or WMV (to name a few), there's a good chance not everybody will not be able to view your web video.

If you're not getting the type of response you think you should be with your web videos, make sure you're not making this easily rectified mistake!

If you're goal is to create a high-quality, maximum compatibility web video, then the number one rule to not break is to make sure you're using the MP4 web video format. MP4 stands for MPEG-4 and as of the time of this article is your best choice for web video format for playback and compatibility.

No matter what device your viewers are using (iPad, smart phone, MacBook etc.) when they come to a page with an MP4 video on it, they'll be able to see it in the way you intended it to be seen. No other standard format can do this like the MP4 format although another easy alternative (but one that has some caveats which I'll explore in a future article) is the use of YouTube, which converts your web video into a suitable format for all viewers.

If you're new to the MP4 format and not sure how to create an MP4 video, I have two quick resources for you.

The first is a free software tool that creates MP4 files. It's called Handbrake and this allows you to convert your non-MP4 files to MP4 files for web use. You can download the software and find out more at

The other tool I would recommend to create videos is Camtasia ( Camtasia allows you to quickly and easily create great-looking screen capture videos, PowerPoint™ videos and even on-camera videos.

With these two easy resources it doesn't matter whether you're already a web video veteran or just getting into the game of web video you can make sure you use the MP4 format for all your (non YouTube) videos - and get them viewed and acted on as they rightly should be!
