A Quick Introduction to Wire Binding

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 192

Wire binding is fast becoming the most popular method of binding available today. Cleaner and smarter than comb binding and easier and more practical than coil binding, and now with prices of the machines and wires dropping, wire binding is becoming more accessible to a larger people. Also known as double loop binding, wire-o binding or OO wire binding, involves punching holes in your document and then using a closer to close the wire around your document keeping all the pages together. Now days most offices have a wire binding machine of some sort whether it is to produces documents for clients, make notebooks, make presentations documents or just used as a nicer way of keeping pages together.

Binding Wires come in two different pitches, 3:1 (the most popular pitch) means 3 holes per inch and 2:1 (normally for thicker documents) mean 2 holes per inch. 3:1 pitch is generally used for smaller sized documents and can bind up to 135 pages using a No .10 wire. 2:1 pitch can bind a lot thicker documents and can be used for binding up to 300 pages when using a No .24 wire. So before choosing what binder to buy make sure you take into account what size documents you be binding.

Most binding machines just use either one type of pitch, either 2:1 or 3:1, this is because they are only capable of punching one set of holes either 2:1 (2 holes per inch) or 3:1 (3 holes per inch). Practically all the wire binding machines suitable for the home or office include an integrated wire closer. After you have slotted the spine of the binding wire through the punched holes, the closer is designed to shut the wire around the document until it is bent into a circle. This holds the document securely in place not allowing any pages to fall out.

When binding documents with twin loop wire a good trick to remember is to bind the back cover of the report on the front of your document. After the document is bound you can flip the back cover onto the back of the document and it will hide the place where the twin loop wire meets giving you a more elegant bind.

Binding Wires are available in a wide range of thicknesses and colours such as blue, yellow, green and of course the standard white and black. Wire binding is the best and easiest way to give your document a smart and professional finish.
