What Is the Rate of Success With IVF and Donor Eggs?

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

In vitro fertilization, also called IVF for short, is a fertility procedure that requires the combination of sperm and eggs in a laboratory. This creates embryos, some of which are transferred to the woman's uterus at a later date. The embryos may implant in the uterine lining and develop, resulting in a successful procedure and pregnancy. While many couples opt to use the male partner's sperm and the female partner's eggs, some may require the use of donor sperm and/or eggs. Reasons for choosing to use donor eggs vary, and the decision is thoroughly discussed with a fertility specialist.

Egg donation may be anonymous, or an egg donor may donate eggs to a couple or individual with whom they are acquainted. There is a screening process that all donors must go through to ensure they are healthy and capable of producing healthy, mature eggs. Donors should be in good health and must be between 21 and 34 years of age. There should be no significant family histories of medical problems or disease, and donors are expected to live a healthy lifestyle. What's more, screenings for disease and genetic mutations are conducted prior to accepting any egg donor's eggs. Psychological evaluations may also be conducted before the woman may donate her eggs.

By implementing such a thorough screening process, success rates with donor eggs are kept as high as possible. Most IVF success rates are around 40 to 50%, although this largely varies depending on a number of factors such as the ability of the female to carry a pregnancy to term and the age of the female partner. For some couples, using donor eggs may increase their chances of success compared to using the female partner's eggs. If the female partner is unable to produce healthy eggs, using donor eggs may be the only way to achieve success with this or any other assisted reproductive technology (ART).

To determine your chances of success using your own eggs compared to using donor eggs, visit a fertility specialist in your area. You and your partner will be screened and tested to determine what is causing your infertility, and then evaluated to determine which treatment path may provide the best results. Some choose to try to get pregnant with in vitro fertilization using their own eggs and sperm at first, and then move to donor eggs and/or sperm depending on the results and the consultation with the fertility specialist.
