Publicity Fit for a Queen (or King!)

May 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 193

You may have seen the British Prince Harry racing with the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt, while on a visit to Jamaica. This wasn't organized just for fun, or so that Prince Harry could stretch his legs a little following his flight. This was, of course, a carefully planned PR move. While the British Monarchy may not seem to engage in a whole lot of press release distribution, they certainly know how to work the media, as well as keep them informed!

I will say that while the Prince's meeting with Mr Bolt was certainly planned; you can bet that the news media were not there by accident either. The story was given added interest since there is talk of the Queen of England being removed as the official figurehead of Jamaica, while the fact that the Olympic Games are to be held in London offered a good addition to the sporting angle.

That said, it is not as simple as just bringing the pair together in front of the cameras, as any publicist would tell you. The Prince and the sprinter were also to be credited with how they interacted and presented themselves when the cameras were switched on. Prince Harry will no doubt have been taught the correct protocol for interacting with the media, while Usain Bolt is certainly no novice when it comes to media work.

Such publicity does wonders for a great many different people, from the national images of Jamaica and the UK, to the British Royal Family and, of course, Usain Bolt himself too! While it may be tricky to get yourself such a high-profile PR placement, it is sometimes worth paying attention to how they do it at the top. How they do it at the top is worth studying, so that you can create your own publicity angles. Make it newsworthy and make it count and do not be the 'boy who cried wolf' while doing so.

Whether you are royalty or not, it does not make what you have to say less newsworthy, but it is often times the spin that is put on what you are trying to convey, may not be a good spin. Headlines and a good spin is what get these celebrities and Royals in the news. Not necessarily that what they are doing is that appealing to the public, but how it is presented to us laymen who may want to, just for once, envision ourselves as a royal or someone deserving of the rolling out of the red carpet. No matter what business you are in, or what it is that you do, you need publicity, so before you start your PR journey, think of the best spin that will get you all the fanfare.
