You Can Sing a Rainbow: Colors and Chakras

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 115

Doesn't it feel great to join a choir and sing a song that makes you feel good? We like the songs and tunes that have positive effects but have you ever noticed that sometimes you just want to feel the emotion of sadness? It's the only thing that suits you best at that time? Apart from the chemical reactions in the brain, eastern traditions believe that the resonance of certain notes has specific physical and spiritual effects. Could this be why certain songs seem right at times while others just don't even register?

The colors of a rainbow are familiar to us all: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. However you're feeling and whatever your energy levels, seeing these beautiful vibrant colors will almost certainly lift your spirits. Once you understand that visible color is the result of different frequencies of light it's possible to see a connection between color and sound. This connection was made millennia ago by the eastern practitioners of healing arts.

Tibetan singing bowls link most closely into musical sound. A set of bowls comprises, but only approximates, the seven notes of the western scale and its sound. Because of the unequal tuning of each note the scale has an Asian feel to it. Each bowl is associated with one of the main chakras, from the root to the crown, in the order of F, C, G, D, A, E, B. As each chakra is also represented by a color it's possible to link colors and notes. Always working from the first or root chakra these are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet respectively. Are you beginning to see the pattern?

As the chakras ascend up the spine the musical notes jump about to create a tune. This is the same tune you'd sing to the rainbow in the sky! For healing, however, there are specific "tunes" to bring the chakras into balance. For the head, for instance, you'd work with the crown, the third eye and the throat chakras. The sequence of notes would go B, A, E and then be repeated a number of times in a various patterns.

Theoretically, as the notes resonate with the chakras, the swirling centers of energy start to synchronize so that blockages dissolve and energy flows freely again. The effect is physical and psychological.

What's really interesting is that a milder effect can be achieved by singing the notes or playing them on chime bars. It's milder because the Tibetan bowls have properties that can't be reproduced by any other instrument. Just the combination of notes can be very calming, all the same.

With a little knowledge of the relationship between colors, sounds, and chakras it's possible to unlock some valuable healing tools. Understanding this connection reveals more about the music we listen to and the colors we like to have in our lives. It also provides the foundation for more in depth work on getting to know yourself with your chakras. With the right combination of sound and chakra work it's possible to ease physical pain and emotional problems.

Whilst this is a snapshot of some of the significance of colors and chakras, discussed further at, I am interested in deeper chakra work and practice Tibetan singing bowl therapy with clients who report powerful results from the note combinations used. The sequence of notes, as described above, also has a calming effect on profoundly autistic children. My work exploring this subject continues.
