The Easy Way To Develop A Positive Attitude

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

We have all heard and probably most of us now believe that a positive mental attitude makes us happy, energetic and successful, but how many people have tried to cultivate such a mind-set only to give up and slump back into negativity?

The reasons behind this failure to change the way we think is down to a number of factors. We are all inflicted, to some degree or other, with a mind that has a life of its own. When we get stressed or tired, for example, how many of us can honestly say that we are the master of our thoughts? Thinking becomes involuntary and negative, or rather more so than it normally is as we go about our day-to-day lives.

So what can be done? Is there a way out of this pattern which restricts our activities in everyday life? The good news is that there most certainly is. It doesn't matter what you try to think - when you are under strain and overly mentally stimulated, you are far more likely to resort to black and white thinking and negativity. The answer to this is learn to control stress in the first instance. Try to perform the following exercises everyday for 10 minutes or so:

1. Sit quietly in a comfortable position and consciously slow down your breathing. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth in a controlled manner.

2. Tense all of your muscles, starting with your feet, and then deliberately relax them. Work your way up through your legs, stomach, chest, hands, arms, neck and head until you are physically limp and loose.

3. Imagine a situation where you feel at your most relaxed and happy. See the colours and hear the sounds - paint a picture in your mind of what you like about the situation and enjoy being there.

These exercises will gradually teach you to control your body and your mind. It is only possible to control your thinking when you are relaxed. Learn to relax and stay relaxed in any situation. In this way - to borrow a phrase - you can learn to keep your mind while everybody else is losing theirs.

As well as the exercises above, it is important to start listening to your mind. You will quickly learn that it is possible to separate the thinking mind and the presence behind it - the part of you that is able to listen to the mind impartially.

As you become practised in observing the mind, try to bring your attention into the present moment as often as you can. Look at your surroundings - see the colours, listen to the birds singing and make no judgements - just look at what is all around you. In this way you withdraw excess energy from the part of your mind that is prone to excessive thinking and achieve a stillness that brings peace and positive feelings.

As time goes by you will find that you grow in confidence and feel happier and more energetic. You will no longer be ruled by fear and will eventually be able to choose how you think and react to any situation. This is the secret to living a phenomenal life. It may seem impossible at first, but believe me, you will quickly find peace and joy that you probably never thought possible.
