The Art of Reinvention

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 136

The change of weather is here and with every new season, it is a gentle reminder that time is certainly moving on and there is no other way but to move forward with our plans and goals. But for some of us, a little encouragement and motivation goes a long way.

If you've been living your life on auto-pilot perhaps now is a good time to re-evaluate where you are at. I read somewhere that we must try to evaluate ourselves every five years, otherwise we'll get stuck in a rut. Life changing or challenging situations are often the catalyst for us to re-think our plans - adversities, a break up, finding love or re-kindling relationship with ourselves or loved ones can often lead to changes, or a series of changes, in our lives.

Often the expectation to fit into a certain stereotype can be overwhelming and unattainable. So what is it going to take to feel fulfilled? A mortgage, the perfect partner and kids, the great career, how about 854 friends on Facebook (and increasing by the week)?

Change is inevitable. Change is beautiful. Change is like a breath of fresh air. Nothing ever stays the same.

And while we may be too preoccupied to have the latest of all things, (phone apps included), the "IT" bag / shoes - life, it seems, only got busier with updating statuses, uploading photos of our daily waking moments and little is spent on nurturing our 'inner universe'.

In my previous post I talked about 'How To Unveil Your Personal Style' but some self-investment could be the best investment you'll ever make. These are some of the things that have worked for me and I often go back to when I need to re-group. I hope you will find solace practicing or at least considering these:

  • Give yourself a break: I've always found some down time can be really helpful. There's nothing wrong with spending some time alone. Use this time wisely to pamper yourself or simply rest.
  • Let it go: How many times have you tried to control something or someone only for it to become quite cumbersome and unbearable, not to mention draining? Letting go can also mean de-cluttering your space to make way for great things. A clear space means a clearer mind.
  • Meditate or exercise: Learn to be still, it's harder than you think. Exercising will give you a new release of energy. Vary your exercise so you don't get bored. Remember it's never too late to exercise and now is the time to carve out some time in your hectic schedule. Even half an hour can make a huge difference.
  • Be Positive: Only choose positive thoughts. Writing a 'gratitude' journal means you are shifting your thoughts and will make changing areas in your life more attainable.
  • Find beauty in simple things: Perhaps your freckles, a flower blooming, your greying hair or a wrinkle here and there.
  • Say NO: Such a simple word - empower yourself by only doing things that please you.
  • Turn off your gadgets: Turn off your phone for an hour or two during the weekend. Don't check your emails or Facebook, you don't need to be 'connected' all the time.
  • Get organised: Create a winning wardrobe by organising what you have and giving away what you no longer want. Get creative and use only seven items to create a week's worth of work outfits. This will also save you from the "I have nothing to wear' conundrum every morning.
  • Do what you love: You'll find you will be a lot happier.
  • Wear what you love: Don't' save your best threads for a special day - wear it TODAY. You'll not only feel instantly better, but your confidence will show.
  • Colourful world: Change your nail polish. Wear red lipstick. Wear a bright top - whatever you do, inject some colour in your everyday wardrobe. Life is too short to be dull and boring.
  • Trust: When you trust in yourself and the decisions you've made, nothing else matters. Eliminate self-doubt and try not to question your decisions.
  • Get inspired: Take some inspiration from magazines, celebrities and create your own mood board - so when you are lacking some inspiration, you can personalise your look around these.
  • Plan ahead: Create achievable goals along the way and don't' forget to reward yourself.
  • Reward yourself: (Definitely my favourite part!). For the final treat, buy yourself a great pair of shoes, treat yourself to a massage or go to your favourite restaurant and celebrate your achievement!

These are just some ideas which will hopefully help and propel you to your goals. No matter how big your wardrobe is, or if your shoe collection rivals that of Carrie Bradshaw - in order to be your best self, there's no better place to start than from within.
