No Going Back

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 173

The Christian life is fraught with challenges like any mortal on the face of the earth. When you start out living for Jesus Christ, it's important to develop a no going back attitude. There are situations, events and calamities that happen to or around us on regular basis that cause a second thought. Natural tragedies are no confirmation of non-existence of a caring God. It's obvious that when bad things happen to especially good people, our tendency is to ask, where was God? Many people sometimes respond negatively and go back on their commitment to serve God.

The story of Elimelech, Naomi, their two sons and the action of the daughter in-laws, especially Ruth paint a powerful lesson of sacrifice and commitment. This family relocated to another country, Moab to seek for a better life. On arrival after they sojourned there for some time, Naomi suffered the loss of her husband and two sons. Life wasn't getting easy for her, so she made the decision to return to Bethlehem-Judah. As a good mother-in-law, the future well-being of her daughter in-laws was deeply her concern. She persuaded them to stay back in their country for a new suitor, but Ruth clung to her and declared no going back.

Here are three principal factors necessary for a no going back attitude:

1) The decision for not going back on the Lord must override any personal sentiment.

It's interesting and very uplifting to watch Ruth made such awesome commitment to her mother in-law who had lost everything and there was nothing to gain in following her. Her life of sacrifice was so remarkable that God allowed it in his word for our benefit and learning. To serve Christ in this present world of self-worship and pleasure demands dying to personal interest that will impede our commitment to his will.

Trouble will come and go, you have to take it as a part of life and decide in your heart, no going back regardless. There's no going back to where he brought us from. Ruth had crossed the line of no return. We read this in the scripture, "And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people and thy God my God: Where thou diest will I die, and there will I be buried: The Lord do so to me, and more also, if aught but death part thee and me" (Ruth 1:16-17, KJV). What a devoted spirit, are you committed to Jesus Christ up to this level?

2) Commitment must exceed convenience.

It could've been very convenience for Ruth to settle back in her culture and familiar environment but she chose otherwise.

• If you're committed you will stay on and no going back.• If you're committed you'll endure hard times and set-backs.• If you're committed, you wouldn't look for excuses.• If you're committed, nobody can talk you out of serving and living for the Lord Jesus Christ.

No going back, no matter the uncertain future. Remember that, a faith life isn't base on what you see but is predicated upon what you believe.

When Ruth said no to her people, no to the possibility of being marred easily, she was saying yes to God. You know what, God made a grandeur provision for her future at that moment. God doesn't wait until we arrive at our destination then run around wondering how to provide for us. The provision is made ahead of time even when we're not sure of it.

3) The benefits of obedience

Ruth obedience to stick to her mother in-law despite the odds was a key ingredient in fulfilling God's plan in her life. We must not despise the counseling of those God has placed over us especially if they exemplify the fear of God.

There's no going back, God will see you through in amazing ways. He'll even remove obstacles that can block his plan for your live. God says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you saith the Lord, thought of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end" (Jeremiah 29:11, KJV).
