How to Avoid Being Common

July 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 176

While there may not be anything wrong with being common, it certainly is also not a sign of distinction or achievement. However, it often appears that many have as their primary goal and objective simply fitting in, being one of the guys, not ruffling feathers, and being average. How often have you witnessed someone spend an inordinate amount of time struggling to come off as being normal? If normal equates to being average (in other words, the norm), it simply means that one wishes to subordinate his own personal identity to fitting in and being one of the crowd. Why all the effort and desire to strive for mediocrity?

1. No one who ever achieved greatness did so by trying to be common! They always strove for more, did more, were more committed, had a vision and goals, and seem focused on what they felt was most important or essential. Imagine if the greatest inventors, such as Thomas Alva Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell, and Albert Einstein just settled for being common? Each of these amazing individuals was often considered to be some sort of oddball, as were most of our most amazing artists such as Picasso, Monet, Matisse, Mozart, Bach, Shakespeare, etc. Far too many of us spend far too much time trying to fit in, and be common, or one of the guys. If one wishes to be great, he must first attempt things others avoid and/ or don't even think about or consider, and then he must be persistent and persevere to achieve what common people consider too difficult or impossible.

2. The most important step to being great is to avoid being common. That begins with not trying to be simply common or average. While it is common for some people to always want the latest fads, or latest fashions, etc., those not wishing to be just average must avoid even thinking about being a Fashionista. The first step for someone is to have the confidence to be his own person, create his own style, and focus on the uncommon. Great people think about great things, while others often over- focus on the petty and often inane. Never settle for being anything less than your absolute best. My late father often used to motivate me to never settle for less than my personal best, by consistently asking me to ask more of myself. If I would get a ninety five percent on an examination, he would state, with a straight (yet encouraging) face, "What happened to the other five points?" And, if I received 100%, he'd ask if there was extra credit. This taught me to always strive for more, and consistently demand more of myself.

Why would someone choose to simply be average and run- of- the - mill, when he can do much more? Often, it is a form of settling, relieving pressure, or avoiding disappointment. Yet, in doing so, that individual will never achieve his true potential.
