Basic Information On Spirulina Powder

Among the many dietary supplements that have become fairly prominent over the past several years, there is a class of supplements that are specifically appealing because of the many nutritional benefits that are present in a single natural source. Spirulina powder is one of these supplements. It can be made into a powder, into a tablet, or into flakes that are designed to be taken in supplement form. One of the most appealing characteristics of these supplements is the fact that they originate from a single organic source, which is called spirulina cyanobacteria. There are many who would classify spirulina as a "super food" because of its nutrient density, coupled with the amount of protein that is present as well. Spirulina has been used as a dietary supplement for many hundreds of years. In fact, historical evidence suggests that it was even used by the Aztecs and various other ancient peoples. Archeologists have found evidence that it was even eaten in the form of cakes in Chad in the days of the Kanem Empire. With such a long historical background, this plant is considered to be a very reliable source of nutrients and many would suggest that it may be instrumental in combating malnutrition that is still prominent in some areas of the modern world.

Spirulina powder contains high levels of a vast number of nutrients. Some of these are the B complex vitamins, including thiamine, folic acid, vitamin B12, riboflavin, nicotinamide (B3), and pirydoxine (B6). It also contains vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin D. Vitamin D is particularly important because it helps with the absorption of certain minerals that are also contained in the same powder. Calcium, potassium, zinc, copper, magnesium, iron, chromium, phosphorus, selenium, and others are extremely important minerals that are found in spirulina powder. As previously mentioned, this supplement also contains substantial amounts of protein. Actually, proteins comprise approximately 60% of its dry weight.

If you are looking for a way to supplement your diet and to ensure that you are consuming all of the nutrients that your body needs in order to maintain health and full physical function, taking spriulina is an excellent option that is highly worthy of consideration. All of these characteristics contribute to the fact that spirulina powder is an excellent choice for those who are looking to improve their nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle.
