Pranab Mukherjee - Veteran Indian Politician

July 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

Pranab Mukherjee, the president candidate of India is considered to be a legend in his lifetime. He is a real hard worker and he spends almost twelve to fifteen hours a day for his multitasking activities. Rasheed Kidwai, the biographer of Sonia Gandhi has rightly quoted about him as "Congress leaders regard Pranab Mukherjee as a living encyclopedia. He is an authority on all subjects from food processing to culture to diplomacy to social policies".

Pranab Mukherjee is 76 years old but still very active in politics. As a member of Indian National Congress, he held many prestigious positions and was the part of different ministerial portfolios in the Indian government and so has wide knowledge of all major ministries. From 1982 to 1984 and from 2009 to 2012, he held the position of the Minister of Finance and he served as the Minister of External Affairs from 1995 to 1996 and from 2006 to 2009 and he also took up the position of the Minister of Defense from 2004 to 2006.

He is well educated and holds a masters' degree in political science and a degree in law. So he is said to have both theoretical and practical knowledge of various aspects of politics. He was initially working as a clerk in the postal department and then he became a teacher in a college. Then he joined Deshar Dak publication from Bengal and tried his hands in journalism.

He entered the parliament for the first time as a member of Rajya Sabha in 1969. Until 1985, he served as the president of Indian National Congress of the West Bengal state wing. In July 2010 he resigned this post to concentrate entirely on national level politics. He has served as a Minister for many high profile ministries and held some international positions also such as the member of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund.

Pranab Mukherjee is respected very much in the social circles of the party. He has a good reputation among the politicians circle. He had a good role in guiding Sonia Gandhi into active politics. He remained loyal to the party and his competence earned him good name and this brought him closer to Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.

He was into some controversies during the infamous Emergency of Indira Gandhi period and for involving in the house arrest of Taslima Nasreen. He was also blamed to have helped Reliance Industries against Bombay Dyeing in some matters related to taxation. But these controversies could not pull him down and he has obtained many honors and awards for his contribution to Indian politics. He received the second highest civilian award of India, Padma Vibhushan award in 2008 and was rated as the best Finance Minister of the World in 1984 by the Euromoney magazine survey.

Both the Indian National Congress and the people of India expect a lot from him since the time he had been announced as the president candidate of India. Whatever role assigned to him, he is capable of doing his part in a perfect way.
