Chipped Beef

Eating in a cheesy diner is not necessarily a simple thing And as it sits on my plate upon two pieces of toasted rye I would like to believe what you are saying to me but I have been tricked more than once before And it is not as if I am an untrusting soul but when people are struggling for money management is not always good And would there be a better way to disguise the meat from some disgusting animal than by covering it in some thick white cream And I know that other people have called it mystery meat But for me it is no laughing matter Spending countless hours in a dirty latrine is not my way of contemplating the value of my own existence It is a wretched experience And I would not do this to a dog But I guess it serves me right for buying dinner off the beaten path And this is just another event that keeps me humble It helps me to ask just who are we the privileged few? In upscale markets and fancy restaurants we dine upon the best never realizing what may sometimes be an awful chain of events Yet I am not ready to renounce my pleasure And if these temporary excursions teach me a lesson perhaps they really should Of course cleanliness is a virtue but there is no escaping the nauseating reality that we too consist of putrid substances that are the product of a beastly environment It does not lie and it makes no effort to deceive Eventually it will consume us and there will be no place for us to hide So we do persist in deluding ourselves In some instances the human form may have a certain level of appeal But the more I look the more disenchanted I have become And it is the people who preen that sicken me so But why have we become so deluded that we have become disassociated from our animal selves It is wishful thinkingThis is all that I can say And as we gratify our lust perhaps our conscious self has up and gone But it would appear that there is no place that we can travelto protect us from these facts Because when we pull back the blinds and get down to the facts Aren't we just a matter of what we eat?
