Waterproofing Tips for Homeowners

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

Homeowners, more often than not, are at a loss to find solutions to water seepage problems that arise due to seasonal conditions. Owing to the rapid outflow of water and the inability of the frozen ground to take in water, this fluid finds its only way to seep through the walls of the house. The arrival of spring and falls seasons, along with rainy season seem to be the peak time when water seepage problems occur on a large scale. Homeowners turn their attention to excavation and proper drainage repairs when they face an ordeal due to water seepage problems. But, preventative measure in the form of waterproofing project provides the ideal solution, and by spending a nominal amount of $ 500-$1500 (prices vary by region), the homeowner can achieve desired results through the water proofing project.

Expensive drainage repairs and excavations are not the only solutions to cure water seepage problems, when water finds its way into the walls. Top quality masonry waterproof paint can be used diligently to eliminate this problem. The homeowner who is eager to find an effective material or product to put a stop to water seepage problems should opt for waterproofer instead of water sealant. Needless to say, the waterproofer differs from water sealant in many ways.

Water sealers come with an inherent property to repel water, and do not possess power or property to stop water from penetrating the walls. In case of waterproofer, it has the power to penetrate the surface and bond with the building material, which enables the waterproofer to build an integral barrier that arrests or stops water seepage. Moreover, waterproofer differs from the ordinary paints, which stick on to the wall surfaces, but get peeled off when water hits the wall surfaces at a great force.

A wet basement wall is another area of concern, as it could lead to much larger problems. Water has the ability to find its own way, as it could make its way through blocked drainage pipes, leaky gutters improper grading or downspouts, or even ruts and reach the ground level to make an entry into the building's foundations. A homeowner should address this issue immediately, to thwart future risks and problems at an early stage. Right measures to rectify the problem should be entwined with proper application of high-quality waterproofing paint, which is the most effective way to prevent water from seeping into the masonry surfaces.

In the same breath, one has to take steps to know whether seepage or condensation becomes the prime source that leads to wet walls and water seepage problems. A simple test can be performed to confirm the same, where a small area or portion on the affected walls is dried using a hair dryer or a cloth in the first place. One square foot of aluminum foil is then used to tape the dried portion on the interior basement wall, which is then left undisturbed for a day, or even for several days.

While the foil is removed, one should identify the wet side to find the right solution. While the side facing the room gets wet, condensation becomes the prime problem. The ideal measure to rectify the problem is to make use of a dehumidifier for waterproofing the room. While the side that faces the wall becomes wet, it is held as a sign that confirms seepage of water. Nevertheless, one should know that both problems can occur at the same time. In such cases, hiring reputed waterproofing services seems to be the need of the hour that can offer the best solution for water seepage problems.
