Plumbing Woes: Clogged Drains

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 117

We all have water in our homes. Water that flows in from the mains, goes around our home's network of pipes and then travels to the sewer lines where it is whisked away once we are finished with it. But wait, the toilet is overflowing, the sink won't drain and there is a steady backup of water. The dreaded clog has reared its ugly head and brought with it a whole host of issues.

Clogs can happen to anyone. They build up over time in some cases, and in others they are because of one too big item being flushed. If you have little ones, they may be very curious about the toilet and how it flushes. Lets face it, it's fun to see the water swirling around, especially if you have something in your hands, like a toy car or little stuffed animal. Hmmm, lets see how this item takes the trip around and around the toilet bowl. All is well, although a bit wet, if you can get said item out of the bowl in time, but if it ends up in the pipes running behind the toilet then you are in trouble because it will inevitably become stuck and clog the drain. If this happens unbeknownst to an adult, and the toilet is flushed afterwards, the water has nowhere to go and will continue to rise up and out of the toilet bowl.

Clogs can also be of the 'building up' variety. In the shower and kitchen sink this happens quite a bit. Losing grease and bits of left over food down the drain will eventually make a gooey mess that will spread, catching more debris and eventually making a clog. It is not recommended that you dispose of grease down the kitchen sink, and trying your best to retrieve all of the extra food left on the plates before putting them in the sink may alleviate this problem. In the bathroom, hair and shampoo reside team up to create a web of a clog deep in your pipes as well. Keeping the drain free of hair every time you shower will go a long way in keeping the pipes running freely.

If you cannot deal with a clog yourself because the traditional remedies don't work or you cannot get to the area in question, this is the time to call in the professionals. Plumbers are highly skilled tradespeople who know how to unclog pipes and drains and get that water running in, around and out of your house smoothly once again.
