Installing a Dishwasher Is Easy

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

Are you still washing dishes by hand? Unless you enjoy the swollen ankles and varicose veins that come from hours standing over your sink washing dishes, why not get a dishwasher? If you were hesitating because you thought they were hard to install, think again. Installing a dishwasher is one of the easiest projects a homeowner can do. It's even easier if you have a garbage disposal under your drain. We'll tell you more about that later, but for now, please read on!

Do You Have the Space?

If you don't have a dishwasher, then you need to make space for one. You need the machine to be as close to your sink as possible so it needs to be adjacent to your sink. If your sink is in the corner of your kitchen, then you only have one available location. If your sink has cabinetry to the right & left, then you have two possible locations.

Rip Out Those Cabinets

Once you have the location, it's time for the best part of the project; demolition! Go ahead and rip out that section of cabinet. If the cabinets are on the edge of your countertop, you'll need to support the very edge of the countertop with a 2x4 so the countertop doesn't crack or collapse when you take out the cabinets. The cabinets should come out pretty easily as cabinets are not one continuous piece of furniture. Cabinets are sections and should rip out in sections.

Make sure you have ripped out everything to make room for the new appliance including the frame and the kicker board in front of the cabinets. If the kicker is a continuous piece of wood in front of the cabinets, you need to saw that so it doesn't destroy the wood under the sink. Though demolition is fun, it will save you work and headache if you are clean. After you have the space clear, drill a hole on the side of the sink cabinet large enough for the dishwasher pipes to fit through. You are going to want something that is around a 1" diameter. Look at pipes coming off of your dishwasher to get the right size. You don't want it too big but you don't want it too small either.

Get Connected

Now that you have the area clean, get that dishwasher in the space. It's just as easy as taking it out of the box and putting it in the new slot you just created. When you take it out of the box, don't be alarmed that it has no back or sides. It's probably going to look like its missing pieces, but it's not. The only visible side of the dishwasher is the front so that's the only finished side. While you are guiding the dishwasher in, have a friend take the hoses and guide them through the hole you drilled on the side of the cabinet. Not it's time for the plumbing!

The Easiest Plumbing Job Ever

If you have a garbage disposal, getting your dishwasher pipe installed couldn't be easier. You probably never noticed it but a garbage disposal has a plug on the side. That's your dishwasher drain outlet. Just look for a 1" outlet on your garbage disposal (there will be only 1), get a screwdriver, and force it in the hole to pop out the rubber plug. Put the pipe in there, tighten it, and you are done!

A Slightly Harder Plumbing Job

If you don't have a garbage disposal, the plumbing is slightly more difficult, but it's still really easy. If you have PVC pipe coming from your sink, cut out a section and insert a new intersect point. The easiest thing to do here is to get a pressure coupling to join the two sections of pipe. A pressure coupling is a rubber piece of pipe with a pipe clamp on each side. Simply insert the dishwasher pipe into one end and attach the other end into the new intersect point you made. The entire process here should take about 30 minutes. Not a huge ordeal but much harder versus the 5 minute install option if you have a garbage disposal.

There you go! If you read this, then you know how easy it is to install a dishwasher. At this point, you should be getting in the car and driving to your local home supply store to buy one.
