How to Care for Your Septic Tank and Septic System

April 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 106

Septic tank care is simple, provided you understand the way your home's septic system functions. When it comes to caring for this important system, it is more about avoiding activities that can cause an overload of the septic tank. Here are a few measures you ought to adopt to maintain a well-functioning septic system.

Avoid Overloading the Septic Tank

Whether it is the water used for bathing and flushing the toilet or that used for washing utensils and clothes, all of it drains into the septic system. Greater the amount of water you use, the higher is the load your tank has to deal with. Therefore, make sure you run loads of laundry with minimum possible water cycle. Pool utensils so that the dishwasher is used less, and use displacers and reducer nozzles on toilet and bathroom faucets, and showers to reduce your outflow of water.

Prevent Clogging of Your Septic System

Solid substances you flush down the toilet can cause clogging of the tank. Place a garbage can to dispose of diapers, tissue paper, cigarette butts, animal litter, sanitary napkins and any other solid waste. Never flush these down the toilet. Avoid flushing greasy substances down the drain because these form a coating over the septic drain field and reduces the absorption of liquids by the underlying soil.

Take Care of Your Septic Systems

You need to pay attention to the septic drain field. Make sure rainwater does not reach into the drain field or it will grow wet and lose its capacity to neutralize the wastes that drain into it. Never plant trees over the septic tank or drain field because their roots can grow down into this area, damaging the tank pumping and piping systems.

Carry Out Periodic Maintenance

An important aspect of septic tank care is to have an approved contractor carry out a periodic inspection followed by a tank pumping if necessary. This is important to check the levels of solids and remove them when they grow beyond a particular level. Although the duration may vary depending on the size of your family and the nature of the wastes that go into the septic system, experts generally advise a pumping of the septic tank after around three years of use.

When you perform regular septic tank care, you need not have the system pumped very often. This saves you a lot of expense because at the very least, pumping the septic system may cost you around $ 200, with the cost being greater depending on the area where your home is located and the level of difficulty in getting to the tank.
