How to Avoid True Septic Tank Issues

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 149

While septic tanks are largely simple systems, there are many things people don't consider that can cause problems with the system as a whole. Simply avoiding simple causes could lead to a better functioning system as a whole and prevent a lot of unenjoyable and expensive repairs in the future.

What not to put down the drain Septic systems are quite good at their job when the right wastes are introduced into the system. Often times problems arise when excess, solid or inappropriate wastes are disposed of. One of the major contributors is the garbage disposal. Over using the disposal introduces solid materials that can be ineffectively broken down, leading to clogging. Also grease, oils and fats can be difficult to break down and eventually harden in the tank again leading to clogs. Lastly chemicals such as paints/paint thinners, solvents, poisons or household chemicals should never be introduced to a septic system because they can kill the bacteria designed to make your system work effectively.

Have Solids Pumped Out One of the most common mistakes home owners make with septic tank systems is that they fail to realize that the tanks do need maintenance. Although not often, maintenance on the tanks can prevent those unwanted sewage problems from arising. While most tanks are designed to function for 3-5 years it's a safe practice to have the unit inspected annually. This will ensure that problems are prevented or resolved before they become a bigger issue. Trained professionals are able to pump the solids from the system preventing clogs and backups. If other problems arise these professionals can introduce specially designed mixes or cleaners that include biological material further designed to break down solids. The best way to ensure this waste doesn't lead to a problem is to regularly have your tank inspected and pumped when necessary.

Take care of your Drainfield Drainfields are as important in to a septic system as the system itself. Without the proper drainfield the system won't function properly. Every field has a limited capacity, and when that capacity is prematurely met problems will arise. For instance, if too much water is use a drainfield is only able to process so much drainage. Once the field becomes fully saturated the system could back up, or worse, come to the surface. Also, inappropriate waste, or excess fats and oils can flow through the system to the pores of the drainfield. This clogs water flow over time and doesn't allow the system to drain appropriately.

If you fallow these simple steps you're septic tank won't be a problem. There's no reason to fear these types of systems if you take the time and consideration to ensure they are maintained properly. A septic tank is as much a part of your home as in house appliances, outside shutters and the driveway. Just because it's unseen doesn't mean it doesn't need maintained. Be mindful of what you're putting down the drain and check your system and you'll be in the clear.
