Basic Toilet Repairs

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 493

The bathroom toilet is probably the most used plumbing fixture in the home. This is why it is important to maintain it and treat it with some care. There is nothing worse that can go wrong in the home than the toilet breaking, and having to wait a considerable amount of time for a plumber to come out and fix it, never mind the fees for labor and parts that may be required.

The most common problem that occurs with the toilet is a malfunction with the flushing mechanism. The best way to avoid this occurring is to ensure that you carry out regular checks and give it the required maintenance so it can work at its best at all times. Replacing or maintaining a toilet flush will depend on what kind of cistern that you have. The three main types are a close coupled low-level cistern. This is the most popular type in the majority of bathrooms, as the cistern can quickly be accessed without any hassle. Other types include a high level cistern; these are popular in more traditional bathrooms and will require step ladders in order to gain safe access, and finally the concealed cistern. These will be the hardest to maintain as they are hidden behind an artificial wall and attached to a wall frame as well.

Luckily, the majority of working cistern and flush parts can be easily picked up at the majority of plumbing merchants or DIY stores at a reasonable price. The most common problem to occur within your cistern is the notorious faulty float valve or arm. This means that your cistern is constantly filling up, not only causing a lot of noise, but also wasting a lot of water too. Signs of this will be excess dripping from the waste pipe, so ensure you keep an eye out for the tell tale signs.

If this problem does occur, first of all you need to shut off the water supply to stop the cistern continuously filling with water. Once this is done, flush your toilet several times and run the bathroom taps until your tank is empty. Once your toilet stops filling, disconnect the valve from the supply pipe and completely remove it from the cistern. You can then remove the split pin and unscrew the cap at the end of the float arm. You will then need to unscrew the piston cap and prevent it from rotating. To do this, you can insert a screwdriver into the gap you have made. You can then replace the washer and clean the cap so that your cistern will now work as efficiently as possible.
