How to Become a Pilates Instructor

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 162

Why become a Pilates instructor?

If you enjoy practicing Pilates, working with others in small groups or one on one, you might be interested in becoming a Pilates instructor.

Pilates instructors are currently in high demand to teach in health clubs, studios, gyms and rehabilitation facilities.

Instructors earn anywhere from $15 to $50 per hour, which varies greatly depending on where you teach and the studio's policy. Some facilities pay a percentage of the students fees, others offer their studios for rent and the instructor may keep 100% of the fees minus the rental cost. Pilates instructors can earn the most by doing private personal training, where students pay upwards of $100 per hour for instruction.

With some experience, a successful Pilates instructor can build a practice with a combination of private instruction, group classes and equipment sales. Enhancing your practice with marketing and social media can increase visibility, and this public profile can be transferred into a subscription-based video series, newsletter or other non-practice initiatives.

How do I become an instructor?

There are many courses of training available to become a Pilates instructor. The Pilates Method Alliance, a non-profit focused on preserving the memory of Joseph Pilates, recommends that teacher training consist of a minimum of 450 teaching hours with a PMA Certified Teacher with more than seven years of teaching experience.

In order to become a Pilates instructor, most training will consist of academic study and experiential training and workshops.

Should I get a Pilates certification?

While it is not required to teach Pilates, many health clubs and gyms require a certification in order to become an instructor.

Having a Pilates certification shows students and studios that you were trained in a reputable program, and that you are qualified to teach Pilates properly and to all levels of skill. One of the other advantages to having a Pilates certification is many studios offer a higher pay scale than for non-certified instructors.

Because Pilates certification programs require teaching and apprenticeship, studios and gyms can be certain that a new instructor has at least some teaching experience before holding classes at their health club.

How do I become a certified Pilates instructor?

There are many different types of Pilates certifications because there are various methods of practice, including IM=X and Stott Pilates. The Pilates Method Alliance, directly associated with founder Joseph Pilates, is the leading certification distributor. However, the tests required to get certified are held infrequently and in few locations. The easiest way to get your certification is to look up programs in your area that are offered. There is also the option of obtaining a certificate online, however that certificate isn't always held as highly as others.

Jillian Smithton is a certified Pilates instructor who practices IM=X Pilates in her spare time. She enjoys practicing Pilates and yoga, indoor cycling, writing about fitness and learning more about the body and how alternative medicine and exercise can promote a healthy lifestyle.
