What Is Adrenalin?

March 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 183

Are you familiar with incidents where you have a sudden burst of energy? You would also exhibit a level of strength and a sense of creativity that you do not normally exude in ordinary circumstances. This burst is what you can also term as a rush of adrenaline. Often, the rush comes when you are faced with unexpected situations. Sometimes, the situations may mean life and death as in accidents and traumatic experiences.

When you are experiencing a rush of adrenaline, you might find yourself inexplicably strong that you become able in carrying or moving heavy objects. In some situations, you also tend to think of creative and smart ideas.

Medically termed as epinephrine, adrenaline is a hormone that increases your heart rate, dilates your air passages and constricts your blood vessels. Napoleon Cybulski, a physiologist, was the first one to identify adrenaline extracts and other catecholamines but it was a pair of chemists named Jokichi Takamine and Keizo Uenaka who discovered the hormone that belongs to the monoamines group of catecholamines. It is known as a manifestation of your body's natural tendency to work for self-salvation. Adrenaline may also be considered as your body's tool in defending yourself from harm that may be caused by unexpected situations.

Even if it is known to be a hormone released almost involuntarily by your body you can also intentionally take adrenaline like you do a medicine. You may use it to treat severe allergic reactions. There are already epinephrine pens or syringes that can be self-administered. But as always, it is suggested that you have a medical professional help in administering the epinephrine injection to avoid complications.

Epinephrine is known to treat certain illnesses like cardiac arrest and anaphylaxis. However, adrenaline injections can induce negative side effects like palpitations, headache attacks, tremors, anxiety and even hypertension. If you would take note these are the side effects brought forth and distinguished by the increase in heart rate that adrenaline is known for thus you cannot just use the substance anytime.

Ultimately, you must be guarded with the possibility or risk of developing addiction to the point of becoming an adrenaline junkie. This can be characterized by a constant need for activities that would increase your adrenaline rate and an over-injection of epinephrine. So, for you to avoid fatal risks and complications always ask for the aid of a medical professional and an osteopath in administering epinephrine.
