Professional Osteopathy Associations Around The World

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 162

The practice of Osteopathy traces its roots back to 1874, when Andrew Taylor Still proposed the idea that the treatment of most diseases or illnesses should be done in careful consideration of the human body, its systems, and its interrelated functions. This procedure puts a premium on your body's overall health through strengthening of your organs and structures and ensuring that they work in harmony with each other.

Osteopathy as a complementary medicine has spread its wings throughout several Western countries. It has become an important objective to help people understand the importance of letting nature run its own course in terms of the body's healing process. With this, there has been a significant increase in the number of medical professionals who engage in the practice of osteopathy.

As a result, a variety of associations and boards of Osteopathy has been established. They serve to uphold a strict code of conduct as well as guidelines that osteopaths have to follow. Also, these boards strive to ensure that the public benefits widely both from the actual practice and from the ethics held by the osteopaths.

There are different professional osteopathy associations around the world:

· American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The AOA serves as the collective firm that represents more than 78,000 osteopaths and accredits osteopathic schools and institutions.

· General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Based in the United Kingdoms, the GOsC regulates the practice of osteopathy in the country to ensure that treatments that are implemented on the public are founded on the principles of safety, skills, and ethics.

· International Osteopathic Association (IOA). An international association in Ontario, Canada, the IOA puts an emphasis on high standards in the practice of manual osteopathy. IOA also performs legal actions like lobbying for legislations that would further enhance the practice of Osteopathy.

· Osteopathy Board of Australia. Mainly concerned with the strict implementation of a code of conduct for all osteopaths, the Australian board works hard to ensure that patients who undergo osteopathy are given the best possible treatments by their most skilled accredited practitioners.

· Osteopathic Council of New Zealand (OCNZ). Established by the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act of 2003, OCNZ protects the patients and the member osteopaths by adhering to mechanisms that ensure the competency of the practitioners who perform osteopathic treatments.

While the osteopathic associations around the world have indeed grown, continuous growth is still encouraged to make the practice of this field really based on skill and ethics.
