Information About Shoulder Surgery

If your doctor has recommended shoulder surgery for the condition that you suffers from then it helps to know a little something about what life will be like following it. The operation we focus in on here is replacement surgery.

Having a replacement procedure will require that you visit your physician a number of times over the first few months following the operation because your progress needs to be monitored. It may take some time after your shoulder surgery but eventually you will feel like your old self again and you will be able to return to many of the activities that you enjoyed before you had the procedure performed.

When your doctor gives you the okay, stay as active as you can. When you do this it keeps your strength up following surgery, as well as your flexibility and your endurance. You should able to do some walking, light housework and yard work and golfing. After your wound has sufficiently healed and your doctor has given you approval you should be able to return to other physical activities you enjoy such as dancing and swimming. You may be told however to avoid any type of heavy lifting or activities of a repetitive nature for a period of time.

Shoulder surgery in the form of joint replacement is not for everyone. A doctor would recommend it to his patient when the pain in the shoulder region and the loss of function in the shoulder become so bad that other treatment methods no longer work. A physician will not automatically recommend a surgical procedure for a shoulder condition but will first try medication or other non-invasive treatments.

The shoulder will need to be X-rayed in order that the bones and the cartilage can be clearly seen. The medical practitioner needs to determine if damage exists and needs to isolate the site of the pain. He has to make sure that it is indeed the shoulder where the pain is coming from and that the issue is not related to an injury in another part of the body.

Having a replacement is not right for every person who suffers from pain. It is not the best option for those who are in bad health. These individuals may not come through the operation very well and may not have a high tolerance for anesthesia. Those who presently have an active infection that is not under control yet or those who are at the greatest risk of developing an infection should not undergo this type of shoulder surgery. A person who has osteoporosis should not have a joint replacement procedure. As well those who suffer from serious weakness in their shoulder area or have had damages to the muscles in this area do not make good candidates for joint replacement.

If in pain, you may need to consider shoulder surgery Houston. Once done, you should be able resume previous activities. Learn more by visiting
