How to Make Money With Photography: Taking Pictures of Children Part 1 - At the Shops

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 175

Turning you hobby of photography into a cash making machine can be done in many ways. One way is to take photographs of children. This article is part one of two to show you how to do this.

Idea 1 is to take photos of children at the local toy store or other shop where kids hang out or go with their parents like the supermarket. Talk with the store manager and offer to turn up on a Saturday and take photographs of the kids in the store. Tell the store manager that by allowing you to do this it will generate extra business for them as more customers will attend. You will benefit from the exposure (pardon the pun) and the parents and children will benefit from the quality pictures they can buy for the albums or send to family and friends.

You can split the cost of advertising between you and the store owner as you will both benefit from it. Advertise using posters in the shopping centre, adverts in the local paper, posters at the local play group, maybe even at the school. Be creative, but do not overspend.

As the day approaches have a look round the store for suitable places to take the photographs. Ideally you need a black background, so as to complement the clothing of the child and not clash with it. Do you need to bring something in on the day to provide this? Think also about lighting - do you need a flash or a reflector to provide the right conditions for the best photographs. One thing to be careful of here is not to have too much paraphernalia as it will frighten the kids and then they will not want their picture taken, meaning no money for you.

Grab yourself a notebook, so you can note down which shots where which family. You do not want to mix this up. You will also need an order book, so you know what each parent wants. To help you try rope in a friend or family member to do this. This will allow you to concentrate on just taking pictures. By maximising the time you can do this it will lead to a bigger pay day at the end. As for taking money try and negotiate with the manager of the store to do this. The parent will pay the store who will then pay you. This is by far the best way otherwise you will have to worry about cash boxes and cheques. For delivery the parent could go back to the store to collect their print thus generating more business for the store.

Another way of doing it would be to publish the photographs on a website, allowing the parent to download them and print them themselves. You could also collect payment through this via PayPal. The problem with this is that they may not go on afterward as you will have lost the appeal of the impulse purchase they had on the day. You could experiment with this and see how well it works. It may work better as the parent could send the link to the grandparents, or aunties who may want to buy a picture of the child, but couldn't attend on the day.

The best thing is to give this idea ago - you have nothing to lose and only money to gain.
