Using Therapy to Deal With Driving Phobia

March 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

The best advice for someone who is scared to drive is, seek advice and help. It is difficult to overcome a phobia when you are trying to do it on your own. Those who have let phobias go untreated for a long period of time will find that it is more difficult to treat. Those who fail to seek help for driving phobia end up suffering needlessly. The phobia can render one vulnerable because the judgment when driving can become easily clouded.

When you find yourself feeling anxious while driving, it is important to see a doctor. Discuss your feelings with the doctor, who will be able to confirm whether or not you have a driving phobia. The doctor is then able to recommend a course of action, which often will include a visit to a therapist. Therapists who deal with cognitive reprogramming can help those with the problem to overcome it. Most of those living with the phobia fail to seek help because they are embarrassed about the way they feel.

Therapy is a good way to treat the phobia for driving. It also helps to speak to others who have dealt with the condition. There are many people who have been treated and have gone on to live normal lives. Speaking to such a person can help to encourage and motivate those who are scared to drive. Many people who have not dealt with the condition are not empathetic as they do not understand it. They think that people should just 'snap out' of it. Someone who has been through it can relate and offer valuable advice.

Talking about a phobia is the first step of the treatment because it helps you to face it. Once you are able to speak about it, you can do something about it. This is why talking is such an important part of therapy. As you talk about a problem, you tend to diminish its capacity to cause fear. With time, you find that you are able to deal with the same situation but it no longer causes you anxiety. It is important to avoid negative thoughts, such as thinking that driving a car will ultimately lead to an accident. Once you convince yourself that something bad is bound to happen, you spend your time anxiously waiting for it to happen.

There are some driving classes that are tailor made to help people with anxiety. The driving classes offer practical lessons, which include driving in safe areas until the driver can graduate into main roads. You can also learn how to avoid tension when you are driving. Learn how to relax and reduce anxiety before you get into the car. Many people find that praying before they get behind the wheel is very helpful.
