Agoraphobia is defined as having a disturbing fear or panic-like state in situations that the person perceives to be embarrassing, or too hard to escape from. This type of anxiety disorder can be attributed but not limited to people who have a tragic fear of large crowds or situations where there is too much social contact. In more serious cases, a person suffering from agoraphobia may be compelled to his or her home due to the constant fear of elevated situations of uneasiness. The underlying issue is a fear of not having absolute control which seperates it from social anxiety disorder and others.

Causes and Symptoms of Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia sufferers have the very obvious symptom of uneasiness when exposed to a wide space and have social anxiety, making them very difficult to converse with. Many medical experts believe that people who have agoraphobia and have not taken steps to take treatment usually develop into more escalated levels and develop other anxiety-based symptoms which could turn into full-fledged anxiety attacks.

Another possible cause of people with agoraphobia is experiencing a traumatic event. As with all types of trauma, traumatic situations can cause panic attacks and such attacks can sometimes manifest as having an obvious detachment to social situations due to the constant fear that the attack might happen again.

Sometimes agoraphobia happens as an aftermath of a mental breakdown from a stressful environment or even drug abuse. The severity of these situations can determine what kind of treatment is needed and how much of it is needed in stopping panic attacks from happening.

Another non-pharmaceutical approach when it comes to treating agoraphobia is joining self-help groups. This can be a great start, especially for more severe cases of this anxiety disorder. Other sufferers will be able to tell you how they overcame this anxiety as well as give you tips on how to manage it by yourself. Although it can be quite a while before you recover from it, this is by far a safer alternative rather than taking depressants since this natural cure for agoraphobia doesn't have side-effects and has a more lasting cure than taking anxiety medication.
