Fear of Elevators

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 164

You have probably heard about various different kinds of phobia so don't worry if you experience panic (mild or otherwise) at certain moments in life, including riding in an elevator. There are millions of people who are frightened by much stranger things. Fear of elevators is quite common because it combines the fear of small rooms and heights as well as a fear of crowds.

This phobia is not usually something you are born with. But it can be provoked by an event that has happened to you at some time - maybe when you were in an elevator, maybe a different trigger that a lift reminds you of. Most of the people to whom it has happened, even just once, later feel a fear of these enclosed, tiny spaces.

Sometimes it can even occur for no reason. It is just a trick that your mind plays on you. If that's the case, you have to keep your mind busy with other important things, otherwise you may start asking yourself: "What if?" questions and that's when your elevator phobia can take a tighter grip on you.

You just have to think of something interesting you can do while being in the elevator. There are some pretty funny things you may think of - for example watching the other people in there and trying to guess their names or even starting up a conversation with them. They will either think you are slightly ill or you will find new friends but with either method your time in the elevator will pass faster and easier.

Some psychiatrists say that the best way to cope with different phobias is to oppose them. No matter how strong your panic attacks are, you need to be able to stay in the elevator until you gain some strength and find out there is nothing really scary in there.

If you are patient and don't give up easily you will sooner or later get better results. It will probably be really difficult and stressful in the beginning but the only thing you shouldn't forget is to try to be as calm as possible. There is no phobia which cannot be cured with the right techniques. Honest!

Another good therapy you may practice at home is to try to think nice thoughts about elevators rather than the morbid fears that you're currently experiencing.

You may lie on your couch and just imagine that you are in an elevator but the most important thing is to be positive when dreaming about it. Think of it as of a bright, pleasant place, which helps you in your everyday life. As you are on your personal territory you will probably forget about all your problems and feel calm and relax. If you manage to combine this calmness and the thought of an elevator you are on your road to overcoming your fear.

If you have tried all the things mentioned and you feel there is no other way you can cope with that problem you can always give up and just try the stairs. Of course, they aren't anywhere near as fast and convenient, especially when we are talking about a tall building and you need to climb up 10 or more floors. Then it's certainly time to start heeding this advice on overcoming your phobia.

Get help to overcome your fear of elevators and find out how you can stop your elevator phobia.
