April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 212

Fear is a natural feeling that we sometimes feel. It is an emotional response the can be triggered by a certain stimuli. What causes us to be afraid varies from person to person, but at times there can be similarities as well. In some cases, fear can be further classified as phobia if a person has an abnormal reaction of being scarred towards a object or a situation. What about fear of bridges? Can this be classified as a form of phobia? How it can be treated then? Let's try to discuss more on that topic so that we can fully understand this matter.

Before we proceed further, let's try to know more what is phobia. By definition, a phobia is a type of anxiety disorder where in a person is having an abnormal fear over a thing or a certain situation. Oftentimes, the person having a phobia will do extreme measures just to avoid the cause of fear and most of the time it is described to be irritating. Some of the common phobias we usually have are the fear of heights (acrophobia), fear of the dark (achluophobia), and the fear of snakes (ophidiophobia). We are familiar with this because some, if not most of us have these similar kinds of fear. But when we talk about the fear of bridges, it's quite unusual that we will encounter something like this.

According to clinical psychology, the fear of bridges can also classified as a type of phobia called "Gephyrophobia". It is a form of phobia where a person who suffers this are afraid of crossing bridges or even getting near at it. As as result, those who suffer this kind of phobia will avoid routes or roads that will lead them to bridges.

People who have gephyrophobia will experience a feeling of dizziness, nervousness, likely to be trapped, and in some cases the person will have panic attacks. The fear of bridges can be developed if the person have had a traumatic experience in the past involving bridges. He or she may have the fear of crossing it because he/she may have fell off and got drowned, he/she might have witnessed a horrible event that happened on the bridge, or it could also be triggered because the person might be nervous that he/she might loose control over the vehicle he/she is driving. Though this type of fear may seem to be irrational and unreasonable, the person who has is in really need of help.

It's common that we get afraid at times, but if the fear of bridges is already impending your ability to function normally, there are known ways to treat gephyrophobia and these are by going to "talk therapy" sessions to teach the person to control the phobia, meditation and muscle relaxation, deep breathing exercises, hypnotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Treatments may also include taking of anti-anxiety medication if prescribed by the doctor.

In conclusion, the fear of bridges may rather be unusual and absurd idea. Even so, it's still a form of phobia that can very well take control of a person negatively. To those who know someone who has this kind of fear, they should not be laugh at because of this. Rather, they should be given help and support them in treating gephyrophobia so that they can also live a normal and happy life.
