I Think, Therefore I Don't Know Crap - Too Funny

February 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 203

The other day, I was talking with a fellow philosopher about the famous quote by Decartes; "I Think Therefore, I Am." And in reasoning this, it appears that the gentleman may actually be incorrect, because he doesn't know if the thoughts in his head are really coming from him, or some from somewhere else, Decartes also does not know if those thoughts are voluntary, or predestined. Not that I'm a Calvinist or anything like that, however his blanket and absolute statement may not hold water. Okay so, let's talk about this for second, shall we?

You see, I've also said that most people in society don't seem to be thinking, in fact when they do claim they are thinking, most of what they say is complete nonsense, illogical, or downright false. They may think they are reasoning, but what they come up with is garbage. Perhaps Decartes might have stated in observation of those folks on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks a different statement; "I think, therefore I don't know crap." Are you beginning to see the argument here?

My philosopher acquaintance, John Almann, suggests that sense we really can't know anything for sure, even our own reality, the fact that we are thinking and reasoning really makes no difference, it doesn't mean that we know anything, because everything we are reasoning with including our basis for the knowledge that we hold as truth, well, we just can't even know that for sure.

The fact that we are trying to reason from a point of not knowing, so that we might know, and then we claim that we must exist because we are able to do this, sure makes a lot of assumptions. Maybe the concept of; "I think therefore I don't know crap," might actually be truer than the famous quote; "I think therefore, I am."

In the future as we design artificial intelligent computers, and we watch that they use the same process as humans do to think, does that mean they exist? We know they exist because we created them, but how can they know, that they exist? And if we ask them to prove they exist, what sorts of rationale and logic will they produce to prove it?

This will be an interesting future concept, and perhaps a nice science fiction story with a very cool and interesting philosophical twist. Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this, and think on it. If you come up with something that I haven't heard before, or hasn't been written about, please drop me an e-mail.
