Does Religion Exist for the Same Reason That Philosophical Circular Arguments Do?

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 240

In the beginning, human societies created religion which created a God or Gods. One thing to me which is quite curious is why this mythology and superstition still exists today. Once upon a time, human civilizations and scientists knew so little, that some of that stuff and those tales probably made a little bit of sense, as human beings were trying to figure it all out. Okay so, I understand that, but it seems in this day and age there is absolutely no excuse for it, or is there a greater need?

Surely, the Greek philosophers were right to state that mankind has always wanted to seek out questions such as;

How did all of this get here? Why am I here? How should I live my life while I am here? What happens to me when I die? When does all of this come to an end?

And it makes sense that any religion which can answer all those questions seems to satisfy the human mind, as long as that human mind is not captured and preoccupied with other issues, would be a viable story to survive over time. Now then, I suppose it is hard to dump the habit, or correct a false belief, not only in a society but in one's own mind. However that doesn't mean an individual can't do that using their superior intellect, not using their brain that was given to them by God, but rather using the same mind which inevitably created that false reality.

Indeed, much of this is a circular argument, and maybe that's the point. In philosophy there are circular arguments which are hard to get past. Just when you think you've broken through, you find out that your previous axioms and logic are rendered full of hypocrisy. And around you go in a vicious circle once again, just as the Chinese proverb has a snake eating its own tail, which actually does happen sometimes in nature.

Does the question; "what if" really become the catalyst which keeps it moving along, rendering it impossible to get rid of, because the proof is so difficult, even though it is known that humans just made up all these stories and thus, the likelihood of it being true are practically nil. You can't just make up a story and call that reality, without any evidence of such, and guarantee it as truth, even in using the concept of "faith" that's really pushing it. Well, I suppose you could choose to believe that and rationalize it all in a clouded mind, but obviously you'd be wrong.

So what is it that grabs the human mind and won't let it free on issues of religion and this superstition which permeates human societies around the planet? It really makes no sense, and perhaps, it's time for the human race to grow up, there is no Santa Claus. Please consider all this and think on it.
