What A Farmer Taught Me About Mice Extermination

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

Growing up near farm land taught me a lot about mice extermination or should I say avoiding mice extermination. Mainly because the farmers would have such great tips. I was experiencing a bad mouse infestation and so decided to ask my boss, who was also a farmer, the best way to get rid of them. Listed below are the best 3 principles he taught me.

Manipulate their behavior

If mice are getting into your room you I doubt you'll be getting much sleep. So the best course of action is to seal your room off so that no mice can get in when your door is closed. You can do this by blocking any gaps or spaces within the baseboards or vents by using caulking or putty. And for even bigger spaces you can use particle board. The most effective advice my boss gave me was to never consume food in your own room until you are sure all mice have been exterminated. With out a food source they won't have an excuse to sneak in.

Make all hidden places visible

This may be a bit difficult, but worth the energy. Mice love hiding and hate open spaces, meaning the less obstacles in the way the less likely the mice will be in that area. When I did it I thought of it more as living the minimalist lifestyle. I tried to get rid of anything big and clunky from my room and live with the essentials only, for example I got rid of my book case and put my books on shelves on the walls. There are the typical things you can get rid of like the stove or fridge but this just makes it easier to exterminate mice because they would have no other choice but to hide there and all you have to do is have a trap waiting for them.

Seal the entryways leading outside

When my boss told me that most of his mice got in through his front door I was amazed because I never realized how many times I've left the front door open to get the mail or talk to a neighbor. His suggestion ended up being to seal up the bottom part of the door with trim so that mice won't get in underneath. Then, install a screen door that springs closed so if you leave the main door open the screen door will be the protection. To be clear he said to put screen doors on all doors that lead outside not just the front one. And last, which I can't stress enough, keep the door closed! The last option is important and sometimes hard to follow if there are children involved. Being a child I remember rushing out the door to get the mail and leave the door open since I would run right back. Or I would keep the laundry room door open to the garage because I was helping my father with the car.

So there you have it. The 3 best tips a farmer gave me about avoiding mice extermination.
