Top 10 Tick Prevention Tips

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 160

Due to a mild winter and general lack of snow for many areas of the country, it seems that spring pests have not only come out early, but left us unprepared for their return. Ticks are just one of the many pests that are already being seen and causing problems for families and their pets. For outdoor enthusiasts there's not usually much thought of ticks until later in the spring and into the summer however this year's bizarre weather along with last year's abundance of acorns has left us unprepared for the early return of ticks.

Thankfully there are many ways to protect yourself and your pets from tick bites. These pests can spread many diseases with their bites including a case of Lyme disease, which can become very serious when left undetected for humans and pets. There's no reason to stay trapped inside from fear of ticks, but it is a good idea to be prepared if you are planning any trips to the deep woods, such as hiking and camping.

Top 10 tick prevention tips:

  1. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed toe shoes when going out into the woods. Ticks can easily hop onto clothing and it's best that no skin is exposed.
  2. Wear light colored clothing so that if a tick does hop onto you, it can be easily spotted. Nothing harder than a tick inspect with all black on.
  3. Use a repellent with a high level of DEET to help deter ticks as well as other pesky insects in the woods.
  4. If you have long hair, keep it pulled back as ticks could easily hop onto your flowing hair as you are moving around.
  5. Stay on cleared trails if possible. Ticks usually wait in the transitional areas such as the line from deep woods to grass lawns or deep woods to the cleared path. Staying in the middle of the path will keep you free from the line of ticks!
  6. If you need to take a break on your hikes or walks, try to avoid sitting directly on the ground. At least a layer between you and the Earth will help to prevent any ticks from crawling onto you.
  7. Make sure that when you get home you do a thorough tick inspection right away and then hop in the shower to make sure you wash off any ticks that could be on your skin. Make sure to check your children and pets as well.
  8. If you are concerned about ticks on your property, try to avoid any areas of tall grass or heavy plant landscaping as this is where ticks are most commonly found.
  9. Keep your pets protected with tick prevention products. It is much harder to control where they go so it is important they are protected.
  10. At the end of a great day outside, even if you have already inspected when you arrive home, do one final check on yourself, your kids, and your pets. Be sure to remove any ticks right away.

By following these top tick prevention tips you and your family will be prepared even with the early arrival of ticks this year. But if you do notice an abundance of ticks on your property or are finding them on your pets, contact your local pest control company to get information on their services to protect your home from ticks.
