The Most Effective Option for Lawn Mole Control

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 130

Lawn mole control is no small feat. Once moles have started to invade your lawn, you will have to exert time, effort and money to get them out of your yard and make sure that they do not return. They not only damage your lawn; they also pose a threat to the health and life of your lawn, garden and plants.

There are many options for lawn mole control today. There are home remedies that have shown promise in repelling them and keeping them at bay like Castor oil and even jalapeno peppers. However, they are just what they claim - repellants. They are unable to permanently get rid of the moles so that they are unable to simply return and wreak havoc again.

On the other side of the spectrum, you also have the option to use a wide variety of pesticides and other types of poisons to ultimately eradicate. The problem with these approaches is that you are also endangering the lives of the bugs, worms and other insects that are thriving and giving your landscape the life and beauty it deserves. Some of these poisons can even pose a threat to humans. This is what makes mole traps such an attractive solution. There are a number of trap types to choose from.

Choker loop traps are similar to the ones that are used to capture mice. They are simply camouflaged inside an active mole's tunnel and you simply wait for the trap to snap. These traps kill the pests by snapping or choking and then tightening on their bodies. Choker loop traps are very commonly purchased and employed by many homeowners, but they don't have the best success record. They are available in almost any hardware store and claim an easy setup.

Harpoon traps are made up of sharp spikes that will close and then puncture the mole that gets in its way. They are highly effective but their use is very limited. Since small rocks and other small objects can potentially get in the way of it closing properly on a mole, these traps should only used in clay or sandy soil.

Scissor traps are pretty similar to that of harpoon traps except that they are made up of 2 curved blades that will close on its victim. Also, these traps can be used in a wider variety of soils and terrain. Just like harpoon traps, they are easily set above the ground so you should not have a hard time with it.

If killing moles is not a viable option for you, you can try a pitfall trap. These traps will only catch the moles so that you can get rid of them by relocation or other method. However, you will have to put in the required effort to dig a large enough hole to fit this trap in.

There are many other mole control solutions on the market today besides pesticides and traps. In fact, technological advancements in the realm of pest control have come up with modernized options such as ultrasonic vibrations. Still, nothing beats the use of traps as a classic and time-proven lawn mole control method.
