List of Possible Health Hazards That Are Brought by Rat Invasion

The presence of mice in our area would often signify that we need to modify our environment. As you know, having these types of pest in our home is something that we should be concerned about. Because of the harmful effects that these creatures bring, proper pest control procedure should be immediately undertaken. Mice or rodents, as we call it are known carriers of diseases and other parasites. This only means that we need to eliminate them before one member of our family gets infected.

Below is a list of several diseases that will give you an idea of what you will be dealing with in a rat infestation.

Murine Typhus - is a type of illness that is often transmitted by flea infected rats. If a person is bitten by fleas, he is most likely to experience fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting and even cough.

Rat-bite fever - The condition is caused by a bacteria known as Streptobacillus moniliformis. As the name suggests, this condition can be acquired directly from the rodent's bite or ingestion of contaminated food and water.

Eosinophilic Meningitis - is a type of brain infection that is associated with an increased number of eosinophils. Eosinophils are white blood cells that normally react in the presence of an infection. This is caused by another type of parasite, a rat lung worm called Angiostrongylus Cantonensis.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium - This disease can often be fatal in immunocompromized individuals. These are people who have low immune system including the elderly, children and people who are currently suffering from an illness. The disease is often characterized by nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The signs and symptoms would usually last for up to 7 days and should be treated with the right antibiotics.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome - is actually a rare yet deadly disease. This has been brought by an RNA virus in the Bunyaviridae family. Humans can be infected through several means including rodent bites, ingestion of food and water that are being contaminated by the rat's saliva, urine and droppings. That's why proper pest control application at home remains as the primary strategy for preventing these kind of diseases.

Leptospirosis - is probably the most common type of rat infection in humans. It is caused by bacteria called genus Leptospira. People who have been infected with the disease may experience severe headache, high fever, vomiting, muscle aches, chills, diarrhea, rash, abdominal pain, red eyes and yellow discoloration of the skin, also known as jaundice.

These are just examples of the possible conditions that you will acquire from rat infestation. If no prompt treatment is executed after the person has been bitten or have accidentally ingested rat infested food, then the person will be most likely at risk of putting himself in danger. That's why as a homeowner, we should always maintain good sanitation at home in order to keep our entire family safe from the undesirable effects brought by these creatures.
