Bed Bugs: The Bugs and The Beds They Lay In

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 213

In an ideal world, these critters would never be in your home. In the spirit of preventing an infestation, there are things that you should do. First, understanding the bug is very important.

WHERE TO FIND THEM Did you know that bed bugs are found in more than just beds? When you're looking to treat your home for these pests, you need to treat more than just your bed. Secondary locations include other furniture like chairs, couches, armoires and event photo frames. These critters are highly mobile and can easily move throughout your home.

WHAT ATTRACTS THEM You will find them wherever people and other warm-blooded creatures are at rest. This is because they feed on blood. So check also, cribs and pet bedding.

As a newer pest in this side of the world, its mobility has made the species next to impossible to stop.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE Know what to look for. These bugs are flat and oval shaped. They range in color from a light brown to a deep dark brown. They can be mistaken as fleas if seen.

KNOW THE SIGNS Their bites even have them being mistaken as mosquitoes. Their bites leave similar red itchy bumps. Another sign of a possible infestation of bed bugs is the appearance of tiny dark stains on your sheets or mattress. These could be from your blood or from squashed bugs.

WHAT YOU CAN DO Mattress covers, also known as encasements, can be used to protect your bed and even fight against active infestations. These encasements cover your mattress and box-spring. They take out the tiny cracks and crevices that enable the bugs to hide. They offer a smooth white surface making it easier to detect them. The enclosure keeps the bugs from their food source [you and your blood]. Without food to nourish them, they will eventually die off.

Protect-A-Bed offers a complete line including pillowcases. These are super soft as they're made out of terry cloth. The waterproof cotton is machine washable making cleanup a cinch. All you have to do is throw it in the wash with the rest of your linens. These sheets will also fight allergens and dust mites. Great for kids.

You can also use special chemicals to fight of an infestation. There are pesticides, or insecticides, that can target these critters and others, making your home bug free. Bedlam bug spray, for one, can be used against not just these, but also adult lice, nymphs, tics, fleas, and dust mites. As an aerosol, Bedlam is easy to use. Just shake and spray. Eco PCO D-X is an all natural dust version and fights also ants, beetles, cockroaches, spiders and wasps. It's water resistant and can even be used for the outdoors.

Whatever pesticide you decide to use, be sure you are careful. While these are all safe for use in and around the home, it is important to use caution whenever you are using chemicals. Read all labels for safety and direction.
