How to Improve Speed In Sports

June 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

Over the past few weeks, I've been talking about how to increase your bench press, with some pretty cool tips that should take guys to the next level. For hockey players in particular, increasing your bench press is important for increasing upper body strength, so that you'll be winning battles in the corner, moving players out of the front of the net, and putting more power on your shot.

This week, I'm here to talk about how to achieve speed that will blow the competition away.

I'm talking Marion Gaborik speed.

This guy, Marion Gaborik, uses his speed to create odd-man rushes and scoring chances by the dozens because he is so fast, defenders just can't handle a player at that speed.

Now if you're looking to take your game to the next level of speed, you need to sit back and listen up. It's going to take hard work. You're going to have to dedicate yourself to becoming a better athlete. Period.

But let's remember, hard work and being smart need to go 'hand in hand'. So anyway, here's this week's tips on how to get 'Marion Gaborik' speed:

1. Quit the static stretching before workouts and games.

New research has been coming out lately that proves static stretching is actually hurting athletes' performances. I know, we've been told since middle school gym class that we should always stretch before exercising. It's still true, we just need to do it in a new way.

So instead of doing the static stretches, do a dynamic warmup. You'll be warming up muscles, increasing mobility, and improving your flexibility all at the same time. Research also says that it increases an athletes ability to perform at a higher level, as apposed to static stretching.

2. Stop strength training with light to moderate weights.

Seriously, if you continue to do 10-15 reps with a weight you're going to get stronger at a snail's pace. If you're lifting a weight for a certain rep count where you could easily rip off 5 more reps, you're not helping yourself get stronger. Start lifting weights in the 3-5 range more often, where your last rep is a struggle. That'll ensure you're getting stronger. And the more strength you have, the more force you can put into the ice, meaning a stronger, faster stride.

3. Stop thinking you can't get faster.

It's the belief among many that you're either born with speed or you're not. This is a load of garbage and a myth that needs to be put to bed. Most young athletes are so weak and lacking basic mechanics that just a little strength training will show significant improvements in speed.

4. Stop running on the treadmill for an hour at the same pace.

This is another one of those training methods that just makes me want to jab my eye with a pencil. If you think that going for a nice long jog is going to make you faster, think again. You might lose weight, which in turn will help your speed, but if you want to get fast, you need to train fast. That means working on sprints and training with runs at full speed. So go to the field or track and run some 40 yard sprints with 2 minute breaks in between and you'll start to see improvements in no time.

So there's 4 tips to help you achieve 'Marion Gaborik' speed. If you're looking for some more great tips you need to check out this product, The Explosive Speed Training Guide. You'll find all sorts of cool tips and workouts in here to help you get faster.
