Why the iPad 2's New Screen Means You Need A Screen Protector

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 221

There are certainly varying reports about the "scratchability" of the iPad 2 screen floating around out there. I think the best way to address this issue would be a dive into the actual changes made to the screen and what those changes might mean. I'll first address the actual design of the new screen. I'll also discuss whether you need an iPad 2 screen protector.

It has been fairly well documented that the iPad 2′s screen changed from 0.8mm to 0.6mm thickness. By the numbers this is thinner but it also gives rise to greater flexibility. There has also been discussion about the iPad 2 no longer using "Gorilla Glass" - aluminosilicate blend which is manufactured by Corning - which was a staple of the iPad 1. Some have suggested that they switched to a different glass blend created by Asahi Glass Co - "Dragontail Glass". Further research into the glass manufacturers reveals that the Dragontail glass is "stronger" than the Gorilla glass. Some measurements boast as high as a "6x stronger tactile strength" and have the glass withstanding weights of up to 60 kilos. While impressive, I believe taking these figures at face value is dangerous. Let's consider these facts in light of the iPad 2 screen.

My take on the iPad 2 screen is that this purported new strength and resiliency comes from its greater flexibility. Remember, the glass used in the iPad 2 is significantly thinner, roughly 25% a thinner build (approx. 0.6mm vs 0.8mm). With the lower thickness and greater flexibility there are different aspects of the iPad 2 screen to consider vs. the iPad 1 screen. Namely, due to the greater flexibility and loss of thickness this translates into better absorption from slower, and lower altitude impacts (dragging of keys, coins, other sharp objects, small falls from the coffee table etc.) but worse for quicker, higher altitude impacts (dropping the iPad from a dinner table, or dropping something sharp on it). Not that I recommend dropping your iPad as a good test - an iPad 2 screen protector certainly won't protect against that level of user error either.

Overall, the change in the iPad 2 glass is not a huge difference compared to the original iPad. What does this mean? You still need a screen protector based on your lifestyle situation. While the screen may be a little sturdier, if you were going to scratch the original one you will still scratch the iPad 2. That is, constant use, travel, movement, and other mayhem are the big factors as to whether your iPad will scratch or not. If you're super careful and clean your iPad every week, store it and lock it away, and ban the kids from using it - you're probably fine. Though there's always the glare and fingerprint factor to consider also, especially for multi-functional iPad 2 screen protectors with anti-glare built in.

Forget what you've read else where and remember that not all iPad screen protectors are created equal. Make sure you don't pick a screen protector that will leave you with a false sense of security.

We review all the major brands and will help you pick the best iPad 2 screen protector for your needs.
