Patio heaters are outdoor heating devices that will help you endure most cold nights without feeling cold outside. However, you must be sure of the one you are going to buy before actually making the purchase. If you get the wrong one, you won't be happy.

You won't be able to make the right buying decision if you don't even know the basics of a patio heater. Let us arm you with proper knowledge to help you in making your decision. Here are the basic types of patio heaters explained for you.

Propane Heaters These are normally self-contained units which have gas tanks for propane to fuel them and produce heat. These usually have burner grids on top of it which provide the heat once propane is burned. Depending on how much heat out put a propane burner has, it can get to radiate heat up an area up to 20 feet in diameter. These heaters are great if you want to move it around from time to time as some models have wheels with locks so you can move them around and lock them in place somewhere else. Small businesses like restaurants can benefit from it due to its hassle free, practically zero need for installation. Before going out and buying one though, you have to know that propane heaters have a minimum vertical or ceiling clearance of about 18 inches so be careful on choosing and make sure that you know how high up your ceiling is before going out and buying a patio heater.

Natural Gas Heaters This is one other type of heater that's out in the market. There are some pros and cons for this type of heater. On the pro side, you don't need to constantly check the tanks if their still full or if they already need a refill. These heaters need a direct connection to your gas line so as long as it is connected, it should provide heat. The down side to this one is that you have to let it stay where you initially installed it. You will need the help of an expert or a professional in installing this heater. But once it has been installed, you don't need to worry about it anymore.

Radiant heaters These types are electrically powered and can be wall mounted or placed on the ceiling. Unlike conventional heaters, it emits infrared heat much like the sun does to heat people and things efficiently. If you don't really have that big of a space you can go for the more compact ones that are perfect as table top heaters. Other heaters of this variant come with a strip style which you can choose to make it custom fit for your location. The wattage for these types of heaters can range from 1500 to 4000 watts in which higher means more power for the heater. Generally, electric radiant heaters are perfect for small spaces and can heat the place up effectively too. If you do decide on getting a heater of this type, make sure you leave the installation to the professionals to avoid non-compliance to certain local laws and codes.

These are just the basic types of heaters, you'll need to learn more than that so you would know which patio heater to get. There are more sources of information on the internet.
