How To Build The Deck of Your Dreams

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 225

When we buy a house, it is not always possible to find one that has every feature we are looking for. Most people want a nice backyard deck to host parties and barbeques on, but cannot find a perfect match. When this happens, it is advisable to buy a house that suits your other needs and then build a deck of your own. Not only will you get to build the deck on your own, but you get to build it exactly how you want it. Contrary to popular belief, building a deck is not difficult, it just requires some construction know-how, most of which you can teach yourself.

Building Your Own Deck

There is a lot of work in building your own deck, but the basics will always remain the same. Be sure to check with your local governing ordinances to ensure that you know all the regulations for building your own deck. You will also likely need a building permit so be sure to have these in place prior to the start of construction.

Step #1: Measure out the area in which you want to build your deck. This includes measuring the length and width as well as the height of the deck. You want to be sure you do not violate any building codes in doing so. Once you have the area measured out you can begin to create your construction plans

Step #2: Buy Supplies.Once you have your dimensions, you can start researching the different types of building materials you want. You can get most, if not all, of your building supplies at the local hardware store. Most hardware stores will also cut wood to your dimensions as well, for an additional fee. If you do not have the tools to cut the wood, paying a few extra dollars at the store will save you money. In addition to wood, you will also need to buy nails, screws and other adhesives for less than stellar weather conditions.

Step #3: Building Time! Once you have the plans and the supplies, you can begin building your deck. You will start by digging out the deck footing, then planting the posts and beams for the foundation. Once those are in place, it is simply a matter of following your construction plans.

If you do not have any construction know-how, enlisting the help of a friend or family member may benefit you. If all else fails there are a plethora of do it yourself instruction books and videos that you can find online.
