Help! I Don't Know Which Type of Patio Heater to Buy

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 199

John Jones is a recent convert to patio heaters. Instead of ending pleasant evenings early because it's cold like he used to, he's now been staying outside for longer. For a man who loves talking about the merits of fine wine with friends this is a bonus.

We have come to his garden in Weybridge, Surrey for one of his evening soirees. As he passes me another cheese square on a stick I ask him about his latest acquisition which is giving out a very comfortable heat.

John is also a rail enthusiast and part of his hobby is researching train timetables so I am guessing that 75-year-old John would have carried out plenty of research before buying his gas patio heater. I was right.

He tells me that they are four different types on the market; gas, coal, wood and electricity. Who would have thought there would be free-standing ones, those that are fixed to the ground and even wall mounted types. Some come with a wooden table, like his one, and others have steel tables.

I said that I was interested in purchasing one and John enthusiastically tells me about the power output. He said it can be described in KR or British Thermal Units (BTU/hs) - John worked as a chemical engineer for years so is used to going into more detail than the average person would want to know.

"You know that standing models should have a minimum 35,000 BTU up to 45,000 BTU. You see anything that's more than this will only offer a slight increase in heat so it's not worth it because of the extra cost needed to run it. Look for those that have a variable heat control." John demonstrates this with his gas heater.

But what about maintenance I ask? John says that many makes come with covers although he makes a point of taking off the reflector at the end of each evening (after it has cooled down).

"I find it's easier putting on the cover that way but that's just me. I store the reflector in the shed, again that's just me."

With that John is off to do some more wine tasting with his guests. I can't help but notice over the wall are his neighbours having a smaller party. They are huddled up under three blankets and look like they will be going indoors very soon. Moments later I am proved wrong, they are still outside but have wandered around to stand under John's gas patio heater. They leave their blankets behind which I guess is a blessing.

John's party goes on into the small hours, this time without the neighbours complaining about the noise.
