Strange, But True Facts About Pizza

March 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

The largest oven baked pie that has ever been made was created in the month of December in 1990. A world record was established in South Africa by Pick N' Pay. The pie measured over 37 meters in diameter alone. Imagine all of the ingredients it took to make that pie.

The longest delivery record is held by an employee of Domino's. She delivered a vegetable pie from a city in London all the way to Melbourne, Australia. That is a total of 16, 950 km. The record was set in November of 2004. It took her two days to deliver the pizza.

The most expensive pizza record costs $30,000. It was made by Domencio Crolla. It was made with edible gold, venison medallions, sun-blushed tomato sauce, lobster that had been marinated in cognac, some smoked salmon and caviar that was marinated in champagne. That particular oven baked pie was auctioned off for charity.

The most expensive oven baked pie can be found at Nino's Bellissima restaurant in New York. It costs approximately $1,000 for a whole one or $125 per slice. The 12 inch hand tossed luxury pie is topped with several different types of American delicacies which include caviar, lobster and chives.

Many people are steering away from traditional toppings such as pepperoni and bacon and opting for more gourmet toppings such as oysters, dandelions, eggplant and tuna fish. Also, gaining popularity as toppings is venison and duck.

If you think tuna and venison sound strange, here are some even weirder toppings. How do toppings such as peanut butter and jelly or mashed potatoes sound?

According to a 1994 survey done through the National Restaurant Association shows that BBQ Italian pie was one of the most common types.

International countries have their own popular toppings that those of us in the United States may consider to be strange. In India, pickled ginger and tofu are popular. In Brazil, green peas are the norm. In Russia, sardines, salmon, tuna and mackerel are fan favorites. Pakistan folks like curry. Coconut is popular in Costa Rica. It is double trouble in the Netherlands with double meat, double cheese and double onions being common toppings.

The top 5 pizza days are Super Bowl Sunday, New Year's Eve, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, New Year's Day and Halloween.

The world record holder for eating the most pizza is Cristian Dumitru of Romania. He ate over 200 pounds of the Italian pie.

There is a bill that is in the parliament in Italy to protect the authentic Italian pie. It states that authorized ingredients and processing methods are protected. In Italy, only the Italian pies that adhere to these rules can be called authentic.

93% of all Americans eat at the very least one pizza per month. If you add that up, it comes out to 100 acres of Italian pie per day or 350 slices every second. Children in the United States that are between the ages of 3 and 11 would rather have it for lunch or dinner than anything else.
