Live Gluten Free: Pasta and Other Meals

May 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 190

Gluten is a protein found in many food products like wheat and grain. It is in bread products as well, which makes gluten free desserts hard to imagine. Going on a diet is not the first choice for many people looking to shed some weight. In fact, this diet is for people with gluten allergies or Celiac disease. If you want to be, read on to do it properly and get the best results.

How to Be Gluten Free

- Identify food where gluten naturally occurs. Grains and wheat-based food have gluten. Manufacturers sometimes add a special starch to reduce the gluten content to use as ingredients for pasta and other similar dishes but they will never be gluten free.

- The next kinds of food to identify are those with chemically added gluten. Sometimes, gluten is added to increase the elasticity of bread or dough. If you are looking to make desserts, choose alternatives marked. You can find these at all-organic supermarkets.

- If you do not have a medical reason to go on a diet, be familiar with Food and Drug Administration standards and definitions of gluten free. This means that certain food can be considered without gluten even with a small percentage still found in the product. The current standard states less than 200 parts per million of gluten in food

- If you are looking for substitute ingredients, look for food naturally free from gluten like rice and potatoes. Instead of ordering pasta you are not sure would be one hundred percent gluten free, order a side of rice or mashed potatoes for your carbohydrate intake. This is especially important if you have Celiac Disease or have intolerance for it.

Tips on Sticking to Your Diet

It does not matter what kind it is, going on a diet is difficult. It is one of the things where deciding to go on a diet is the easiest step you could take. You could decide to go on a dessert diet and it would still be difficult to keep up.

Set short-term goals and do not be overly ambitious. If you tell yourself you will give up sweets forever starting tomorrow, it will only make you indulge on it today. The same goes for losing weight. Aim to lose just a couple of pounds. It also helps if you have something to anticipate. Reward yourself after you succeed like a shopping spree after you have gone down a size.

Whether out of necessity or you are just interested to try living on gluten free pasta and other food, research thoroughly before making the lifestyle change. You should not start any kind of diet without knowing what you are getting into. If possible, consult your physician or a dietician in case the diet you want to begin is not suited for your situation
