Swap Party - Swap Till You Drop

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 174

A Swap Party is made up of items no longer needed or wanted by its owner. Everyone has items in their home or in the back of their closets that they no longer use or even new items that they never used.

Clean out your closets, grab your friends and trade your stuff at a swap party where everyone leaves happy and nobody spends a dime.

Swap parties are popping up all over as a fun, free, and green way to get rid of what you no longer want and take home something you do.

Here's how it works:

Invite a few friends and ask them to bring items to swap. Lay out the loot and allow browsing time, then each guest will take a turn choosing one new item for each item they brought. The only rule is that everything up for swap is clean and in good condition.

Swap Zone

A dining room table is an ideal site for a swap party. Protect the table with a wide runner of craft paper and use a few sturdy, clean cardboard boxes to display the merchandise at different heights for easier viewing. Put taller boxes in the center of the table and shorter ones around it. Arrange the small items on the top of the center boxes and the other items in an attractive arrangement around on the shorter boxes. Use dining chairs for even more display space. Scoot them back from the table and lean, drape, and stack swap items on and under.

Party Refreshments

Keep party food light, easy, and portable. A coffee bar with creative stir-ins such as marshmallows, white and dark chocolate chunks, ground cinnamon and cardamom will be just right for a weekend morning gathering. Thick slabs of quick bread in waxed paper bags (available in the candy making aisle of a craft store) make it easy to munch and browse.

Paper Power

A great way to brighten and decorate for the party is to use colorful wrapping paper. Use it on the invitation, on the display table, and under the refreshments. The wrapping paper can also be used on the invitations.

Steps to Organize Your Swap Party

Invite guests and let them know how many items they can bring. Five guests, each with 10 items in tow, is a good size for a party. Our invitation is made from a large cardboard tag dressed up with decorative paper and a printout of the party details is glued to the tag.Tag each item as it arrives. Have a stash of tags ready and invite guests to write a description and "selling point" for each item. The tags are cut out from cardboard, hole punched at the top, and topped with an adhesive mailing label for them to write on.Set up a claim system by giving each guest a set of clothespins monogrammed with stick-on-letters. (Using each guest's of initials is a good way to identify each guest.) To claim an item, they clip one of their tags to the description tag. If multiple people want the same item, put all the clothespins in a hat and draw a winner.Box up leftovers at the end of the party (recruit guests to help) and donate them to a local charity or shelter.

Having a Swap Party is a great way to clean out the extra items in your home. It is always fun to get together with friends and this is a great way to accomplish both.
