Whitney's Story Can Strengthen America!

February 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

Whitney Houston was blessed with a God-given voice to inspire all of us. She struggled with drug abuse to escape her fears and pain. Whitney couldn't save herself but her story can help save others.

Many Americans grew up with addicted family members. My father and mother's drug of choice was alcohol. In the process, they destroyed my brother and our family.

During the past 40 years, politicians spent billions trying to stop the drug epidemic as welfare and homeless populations increased. Politicians assumed money and programs could turn the tide but drug abuse got worse!

Using illegal drugs and misusing prescription drugs have taken a heavy toll on families and communities. The results have been increased domestic violence, child abuse and divorce.

Stress created a sicker society with heart problems and obesity, which burdens our health care system. Disconnected youth act out in destructive ways including bullying, promiscuity, drugs and gangs. Today 40 percent of babies are born out-of-wedlock. Youth are following self-destructive role models and becoming violent at an earlier age.

Experts say, addiction is a disease. Those who can afford it get counseling or go to rehab centers for the cure. However, they often relapse over and over again.

Whitney Houston had power, money and adoration but her ego kept her locked into drugs. It takes humility to turn to God and time to become self-aware. The Bible, Proverbs 16-18 states, "How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgment than silver! The path of the virtuous leads away from evil: whoever follows that path is safe. Pride goes before destruction and haughtiness before a fall."

As an inner city crime and violence prevention consultant, I see addiction as a crisis of the spirit problem with users lacking the ability to handle their fears, stress and emotional pain.

I met A.J. after he turned his life around. He had been a drug dealer and got hooked on drugs. He soon became homeless. He was hungry and went to the Rescue Mission. They said he had to listen to a sermon before eating. By the third visit, he fell on his knees and asked for God's help. He has since become a community leader, neighborhood mentor to 25 children and sponsors a Christmas party for 300 children every year.

Over the years, I worked with homeless citizens and started support groups with pastors. Many men have turned their lives around.

Four reasons why our national discourse fails to include God.

1. Americans are confused; don't see the need for religion or lost faith in religious leaders. Some think religion is a cult or see religious people as hypocrites.

2. A spiritual solution requires no money or experts. It requires believers to seek faith, forgiveness and self-awareness.

3. Users have to acknowledge their addictions as false gods that control their lives. Humility and letting go is a difficult first step.

4. The media and politicians are uncomfortable discussing the need for a loving God. They use separation of church and state to resist focusing on what has worked for centuries.

An addiction is spiritual ignorance! Americans need the religious community to work together and start a national discussion to help young people become self-aware so they can discover their inner power and resist drugs before they make bad choices. Real change will happen through God's people.

We lost Whitney Houston and many other talented stars due to drug abuse. Time to unite and spread the word, it is "better to get wisdom than gold."
