How to Start Potty Training Your Child

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 75

Potty training should be the easiest thing. Why? Because you should never wait until you think your child is ready or you think he/she is old enough to understand the concept.

It should be something that your child has always known.

Here is the easiest way to potty train your child without ever potty training your child.

  1. As soon as your baby is old enough to sit up unaided, buy a potty, this is when to "start" potty training.
  2. Place the potty in the living room so it is in a central place for use.
  3. Place your baby on the potty, chat to him/her while they are on it as you give them the chance to get used to the feeling of having nothing under their bottom.
  4. When your baby wakes, pop them on the potty, during regular intervals while they are up, pop them back on, and before they go back to bed, pop them on again.
  5. If baby goes wee's or poo's on the potty, make a big deal! Sing a song, even make up a special toilet song, anything that gets bub smiling and interacting with you
  6. If bub does nothing, don't do a thing, as it doesn't matter, they will eventually

Do not read to them or play games on the potty, you don't want them to associate toilet time with play time. Chat to them while they sit there but don't bring in anything to distract them.

By using these steps, your child will never NOT know the feeling of sitting on the toilet, a lot of kids struggle with toilet training as it's such an unknown feeling, all they have ever understood is Nappy's, and then there go Mum and Dad changing it all up by introducing a completely foreign concept.

But by getting them used to it so young, it's a walk in the park, as it's something they have always known.

Eventually, as bub gets older, he/she will make the natural progression into wanting to use the big toilet just like Mum and Dad, this will happen all on its own, but obviously you can encourage them by letting them know every time you are going, just in case they want to come too as they learn by observing and repeating.

(Handy Tip: It's sometimes a good idea to put toilet paper in the toilet as well, as a bit of a splash can put them off)

This is the most stress free way to get your child into underwear without ever having to deal with many (if any) accidents, and help build their self-esteem and confidence.

Cavemen never "initiated" Potty Training, so don't complicate yourself with hundreds of books, flashcards and dancing puppets.

Keep it Simple!
