How to Raise Bookworms

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 120

One of the best things for our children is to be life long learners, and being readers is a big part of that. But what do you do to encourage your children to read especially the ones that maybe can read the words but don't seem interested in reading books on their own?

1. Read, read, read, read...

Your children will do what they see you doing consistently. If you can't remember the last time you picked up a good book, your children probably won't see that reading is something you do outside of schoolwork. If your children see you reading for fun, they will believe that books are a source of fun and enjoyment. If they see you reading to learn things, they will see books as a source of knowledge to learn things they want to know. Set the example for them.

2. Read Aloud to Your Children.

Get their ears and minds tuned to good literature. Get them used to painting the pictures in their head. In our modern society with television telling the story and showing the picture, sometimes it takes a little bit for children to realize that they can make their own pictures in their heads. Also reading aloud to your children lets them experience stories that they can enjoy now but would not be able to read for several more years. Even when your children are capable of reading to themselves read alouds are a good way to enjoy time together and expose them to books that they might not pick up on their own.

3. Help them to find things to read that they enjoy.

There are a lot of homeschooling blogs out there that tell you what your kids "should" be reading. Especially in that stage where they can read the words but they aren't quite to the point that the words paint pictures in their heads....I would rather them read a little easier books or even ones that are less scholarly and learn to enjoy reading than read something that they are having trouble with. If you feel that it is very important that they encounter a certain book at this point in their education, use it as a read aloud.

Becoming a bookworm can take some time. Be patient with your kids. Read good books to them, keep working on finding books that they will enjoy reading, and continue to set the example.
